Chapter 22

Sonny knocked on the door impatiently. Finally it opened.

"Sonny, um hi. What are you doing here?"

"Hi Laura can I come in?"

"Sure she replied obviously wondering what he was doing there. Luke is upstairs..."

"Actually I need to talk to you."

"And why exactly would you be wanting to talk with my wife, Corinthos?" Luke asked as he came down the stairs. Deciding that he didn't have time to banter with Luke he began explaining right away.

"Alexis is missing, I think Danniel Merik took her."

"What?" They both asked in unison.

"That's why I'm here, Laura, your the only one who knows this guy."

"Well I'm not sure what I can tell you, I assume you know he's Helena's nephew." Both of them ignored Luke's outraged roar and continued.

"Yeah, but that's about all I know about him. What I really need to know is how close he is to Helena."

"Well when I knew him he wasn't very close to her at all. He spent most of his time with Stefan and..." She stopped as though she suddenly realised what she had been about to say.

"Its okay," Sonny told her, guessing that that was why she stopped. "Alexis told me about Elina."

"Who the hell is Elina?" Luke asked annoyed with being ignored.

"Stefan's younger sister," Laura explained before she continued talking to Sonny. "Danniel doted on Elina, well everyone did. He really did seem like a nice guy, I don't think he would have taken Alexis." Sonny finally let himself realise that he was actually hoping Danniel had taken Alexis. He did believe that Danniel loved her and wouldn't hurt her. His only other suspect was capable of anything.

"You're worried that Helena might have done it," Laura told him voicing his thoughts.

"Have you called the police station to make sure she's still locked up?" Luke asked. Sonny looked shocked, in his rush to blame Danniel he hadn't thought of that. Luke quickly picked up the phone. "Hi Bubba, just checking to make sure America's favourite psycho mommy is still safely locked away. What?" The smile was suddenly gone as he listened to whatever Mac was telling him.

"Luke what is it?"

"Helena escaped a couple hours ago."

"Damn it." Sonny began to head out the door but Luke hung up the phone and grabbed him.

"Hey man, where are you going?"

"I need to find her before Helena hurts her."

"You don't know where they are, just take a minute to think this out."

"I never thought you would act as the voice of reason Luke."

"Sonny, what about Jillian?" Laura asked.

"She's fine, she's safe. But I'm sure that she's the reason Helena took Alexis. Danniel saw Jillian earlier today he realised who she was and probably told Helena. That's why she took Alexis, she hoping she'll tell her where Jillian is." Laura quickly explained who Jillian's mother was and the way Helena had felt about her only daughter.

"Well knowing Helena she's probably planing on having the kid brought to her and reliving the past."

"You think she's on the island?"

"Don't you?"

"What island?" Sonny interrupted them.

"Cassadine island." Chills came over Sonny as he imagined Alexis being brought back to her childhood home. She barely ever spoke of her childhood but Sonny knew it had been almost as much of a nightmare as his own and going back to the house where it had all happened would be horrible for her.

Alexis could feel something painfully digging into her wrist. She tried to move it but that only made the pain worse. She had come to some time ago but still had no idea where she was. She remembered the man who took her from her penthouse. She could also remember fighting with him in the car, but then he had injected her with something. She was now sitting on a chair, her wrists tied behind her back. The room was dark and cold. She heard footsteps approaching and then a bright light appeared, causing her to shut her eyes against the pain. Finally she heard a voice.

"Hello Alexis I do hope you're comfortable."

"Helena? Where am I?"

"Don't you recognise this place?" Helena laughed. "You should, after all you spent almost half your time in this room when you lived here." Alexis now knew where she was and the thought of it made breathing difficult. She was in the cellar. She had always been terrified of this room but had quickly learnt that it was the one room in the large house Helena never entered. At once it became her sanctuary, she was more scared of Helena than she was of the room and as long as she kept the light on she was okay. Then one day Helena had entered the room and found Alexis. She had removed the light and locked the door, keeping the screaming child inside for two days. Afterwards it became like a game for Helena, she would constantly find or invent misbehaviours for Alexis, always sending her to her room. To Meikos it sounded perfectly harmless in terms of a punishment, after all Alex's bedroom, though modestly furnished was not a bad place to be. He didn't know that Helena had told the child that the cellar was now her room, he didn't understand why she looked at him with such sadness as she made her way there. Alexis for her part thought he knew where Helena was sending her, she knew now that he had not known.

"What do you want?" Alexis asked trying desperately to sound brave.

"I only want what you stole from me Alexis, I want my granddaughter."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Come come dear, there's no reason to lie, Danniel told me all about the child."

"The child is my daughter." Alexis told her and felt the pain of Helena slapping her.

"How dare you claim my precious grandchild as your own. You are nothing but the daughter of a whore and should not be allowed with ten feet of that girl." Helena was getting into a rage becoming increasingly upset as she spoke. "I knew it was your fault that my daughter left, you turned her against her own family. Then you stole her child. It's because of you that my Elina is gone, but I won't let you keep me away from her daughter." Alexis remained silent, praying that Jax would keep Jillian in Alaska. "Where is she Alexis?" She didn't say anything and soon Helena was smiling cruelly. "Very well, I was hoping it wouldn't have to be this way... Oh who am I kidding this is just the way I dreamed of it." A man appeared behind Helena, he was at least six feet tall and very muscular. "Alexis this is Greg, I'm going to leave you two alone to talk for a while, I'll be back when you feel more like talking." Helena closed the door as she left leaving the room in darkness once more. Alexis waited, trying to brace herself, but nothing could prepare her for the pain she felt as Greg struck the first blow.

Sonny could not believe this was really happening. He kept remembering how he had behaved the last time he had seen her, he hadn't even kissed her before leaving. Now he was terrified he might never be able to kiss her or hold her again.

"It's going to be okay, Sonny. We'll find her." Laura tried to reassure him.

"Thank you so much, both of you for coming with me." Both Luke and Laura had volunteered to accompany him to Greece. At first he had been reluctant but as they pointed out he didn't even know where the island was much less have any idea where Helena might be keeping Alexis. Laura knew the island well and would be able to show them where to go. Luke was always a good person to watch your back and Sonny suspected Luke was itching for the chance to take Helena down for good. Before leaving he had instructed Max to take Kristina out of the country. They had left, just before he had. He didn't want to send them to Alaska in case Helena was having them watched but he knew he needed to protect Kristina. Alexis would rather die than tell Helena where Jillian was and once Helena realised that she would probably try to use Kristina to persuade her. Sonny had taken care of everything. Now he just needed to find the woman he loved and bring her home.
