Vegeta was one of the bad guys in the Saiyan Saga. He wanted to wish for immortailty. Vegeta doesn't do any fighting until Nappa fails to kill Kakarot. Vegeta never understood how a 3rd class Saiyan could be that strong. He even had to transform to beat him but even that wasn't enough because then Krillin and Gohan helped Goku. Vegeta in the Freeza Saga is bad for some part of it but he has to team up with Krillin and Gohan to fight the Ginyu Force. Vegeta isn't really bad after that until the Gt series when Beib took over his body.
