"American Beauty"

Without a doubt, American Beauty is one of, no, THE greatest movie of the late 90's. Allan Ball has a superb script which switches from Tootie funny to Goodfather seriousness at a rate that would make Flash Gordon's head spin. It is a movie full of people who all have something wrong, something that would make you just hate them. But you don't. With the possible exceptions of Mena Suvarta's charactor and the marine, you don't hate them at all. Wes Bentley's a pothead? So what? Keven Spacy quit his job for a job at a burger place, doesn't talk to his daughter, yells at his wife, and even has a thing for his daughter's best freind? That's cool, too. You see, all of the charactors are so wonderful, they are impossable to hate. And just listen to that music! The upbeat theme when the camera pans along the street. The softer score while Wes Bently is taping the neighbors. I'll tell you, mid-life crises don't get more entertaining then this.
