Chapter Twenty-Three

He walked into the partially pitch black room and listened to all the beeps and the sound of the respirator moving up and down, the only thing keeping his wife--well ex-wife alive at the moment. He felt as though it was the only thing keeping him alive at the moment, too. He pulled a chair next to her as the doctor silently slipped out of the door, shutting the door quietly. He reached for her small hand and almost cried at how cold they were. She was burnt, badly burnt. He gasp as his eyes traveled down her body, he saw a bruised, burnt and bloody version on the women he once loved with his entire soul, hell maybe he still loved her.
"Leigh," he choked fighting back sobs that would rock the entire hospital. "Baby. I am so sorry. I love you, I always have. I love you so much! You've changed, I've changed! We can work it out. I love you Leighanne Littrell! We have to work this out; we have to stay together! What about our children? Thomas is gonna start kindergarten soon! He needs his mommy and daddy to walk him there! What will they do without us together?" Brian was near hysterics as the words flowed from his mouth. Brian wiped the back of his sleeve over his eyes, the tears were on automatic, and they just would not stop. He locked eyes with his love the minute her bruised eyes opened the slightest. He looked up then back down at his wife as a sudden tear began to slide down her cheek.
"I love you, too." She mouthed as her eyes opened a little more.
"Leighanne! You're awake! You're gonna be okay! We'll remarry!" Brian screamed as his grip increased on his wife's hands. She laced her fingers, painfully, with his. She held eye contact with him, hoping that her feelings would jump from her heart into his heart. She shook her head 'no' and smiled.
"She's good Bear. She is good." Brian's heart stopped when her eyes snapped shut and a long beep followed her last words.
