A TRIBUTE

Fourteen years ago today,(Oct. 7,2000) an old man lay on his death bed. His strong stature now slouched and small. His strong, piercing eyes sunken. His body is being eaten away by cancer. "He was a Colossus," as described by Walter Mattheau. He was the tallest Jew that anyone had ever seen when he was in his prime. He was born on January 1, 1911 in New York. Twenty-seven years later, he was two home runs away from tying Babe Ruth's record of 60. This man once skipped a game on Yom Kippur to go with his orthodox parents to temple. When he walked into the door, the congregation gave him a standing ovation. The Yankees scouted him for first base, and when they told him the current first baseman was on his way out, he told them "no." That first baseman was Lou Gehrig. He was still at the beginning of his consecutive game streak. That young Jewish boy was signed by the Detroit Tigers and stayed in the minors for a few years until 1933. He was the first baseman from then to 1941, when, two days after Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the United States Air Corps. He commanded a fleet of B-17 bombers over the South China Sea and over Burma. When he got out, it was 1945 and his team was in a pennant race. In the bottom of the ninth inning, with two outs, he hit a grand slam to win the pennant on the last game of the season. He retired in 1947, after playing a sorry season for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is buried in Hillside Memorial Cemetery. On his plaque in the mausoleum, it says "Loved and admired by so many." That man on his death bed on September 4th, 1986, was Henry Benjamin Greenberg, Number 5, Hall of Fame first baseman for the Detroit Tigers. He is considered the greatest Jewish batsman to ever have lived. I am asking all Jews to remember this pioneer, on the 14th anniversary of his death. He was a gentle giant who loved his people. It is fitting that we thank him by sending this memorial to as many Jews as we can. We must all remember what he did for us. He was a hero during a time of dark night for our people. He was a beacon of light to shine through the storm. Please, send this to every Jew on your message list to remember him. Thank you. Click here: Rearview Mirror: "Hammerin' Hank" Greenberg
