Silence descended around the table again. The only noise was the munching of food.
"Well, Jessica." Lila gamely stepped into the fray. "I know that the barbecue is a celebration for your paper, but I thought of another treat that I'd really like to give you." She smootheed back her chestnut hair and smiled at her friend, although it was clear she was making an effort to avoid the sight of Jessica's T-shirt.
"What is it?" Jessica couldn't help being touched by Lila's offer.
"I thought we could go to the Green Door ans have a head-to-toe spa day."
Jessica pushed back her chair and stood up. The conversation around the table stopped, and everyone stared at her.
"Thanks, but no thanks." She tossed her napkin down on the table. "I should get home." Jessica paused. "Dinner was delicious," she said, attempting to be polite. "But I really have to go."
Jessica walked across the lawn and headed for the quad. She was dimly aware that the entire table was still staring at her.
"I don't care," Jessica said stubbornly as she left the Thetas behind. "I don't care about anything, anything at all."

Jessica is sliping away fast - but Elizabeth is too busy with Mike to notice. Will Jessica make a desperate cry for attention? You're Not My Sister
