Elizabeth Wakefield is about to say hello to an exciting new school. But first she has to say good-bye to everything - and everyone - she loves. Good-bye to Nina Harper her best friend. Good-bye to Todd Wilkins, the ex-boyfriend who's stood by her through thick and thin. Good-bye to Tom Watts, the guy who broke her heart into a million pieces. But how can she say good-bye to her twins sister, Jessica?
Dana Upshaw stole the love letter that could have brought Tom and Elizabeth back together - just so she could have Tom all to herself. But now Tom seems headed for an emotional breakdown. Does Dana love him enough to tell him the truth . . . and lose him to the woman he truly loves?

How far can Elizabeth run?

"Elizabeth!" she heard someone shout. Through the driving rain she saw Tom Watts charging down the sidewalk toward her.
What is going on? she wondered. Everywhere I turn today, there he is. And he looks aweful! his scruffy appearance went far beyond someone who'd gotten caught in the rain. He was filthy and inshaven - wild-looking, like some deranged vagrant.
"E-liz-a-beht!" he bellowed.
He sounded so pathetic, she couldn't help but pause and look back again. What has happened to him? she thought with disgust. Never in my wildest nightmares could I have imagined Tom like this.
As Tom limped steadily toward her Elizabeth realized that he'd already closed up much of the distance between them. With a gasp she spun around and scurried away. He was beginning to scare her.
"Elizabeth, wait!" I have to talk to you!" He leaped from the sidewalk and cut across the muddy lawn.
From the corner of her eye she saw him splashing, slipping, and sliding closer and closer. Horrified, she turned her fast walk into a jog and then into a out-and-out run.
