The ghosts of true loves past . . .

Todd propped his elbows on his knees and rested his forehead in his hands. "I wasn't sure you'd be here," he mumbled, staring at his own feet.
"Of course I'd be here. Gin-Yung was my friend."
When Elizabeth reached again for his hand, Todd looked around almost guiltily.
"I'm only trying to comfort you, Todd." Suddenly she wondered if he thought Gin-Yung's ghost was watching from the next world. Even if it was true, she wouldn't have minded their holding hands. Gin-Yung had wanted Todd to love - and be loved - after she was gone. Right now Elizabeth knew Todd needed someone to help take away the pain of losing her.
"Liz, I'm so . . . I just can't-"
Shhh." She pulled him close. "I'm here."
Todd laid his head against Elizabeth's shoulder, but he felt stiff in her arms, as if he was uncomfortable with her touch. No, that's just my imagination, she assured herself. He's hurting. She rested her hand against his thick, sandy hair. The familiar scent of his shampoo and aftershave reminded her of the nights they'd spent at Miller's Point when they were in high school. Gently, before she realized what she was doing, Elizabeth caressed the smooth skin at the back of his neck.
He moaned softly and pulled away. "Don't."
