"Don't you get it? Lila demanded. "You won the Pineapple People contest! That disgusting recpe you and Mandy entered two months ago actually won the grand prize!" Lila lowered her voice to a whisper. "And do you have any idea what the grand prize is?"
"A zillion cans of pineapple?" Jessica guessed.
"A trip to Hawaii for the winner and two friends!" Lila hissed.
"Hawaii?" Jessica echoed. "Islands and volcanoes and hula dancers - that Hawaii?"
"You've got to get to a phone, Jess! You have to claim the prize by calling the magazine before eleven A.M. on December twenty-first."
"That's today!" Jessica cried. She glanced up at the clock in the hallway. "But it's only seven fifty-five-"
"Eleven, Eastern Standard Time," Lila interrupted. "That's eight, here in California. It's a different time zone."
"Are you sure?"
"Positive. You've only got five minutes, Jessica!"
The girls raced towards the pay phone in the lobby. "Guess what the consolation prize is if you don't call on time?" Lila said breathlessly as they ran. "Pineapple! Two hundred cans of pieapple!"
