Identical twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield have always considered themselves best friends . . . but lately they've been acting like worst enemies. So they make a New Year's resolution: no more arguing or disagreeing about anything.
Jessica forces herself to gush over Elizabeth's new blouse, even though it's the dweebiest thing she's ever seen. Elizabeth pretends she's thrilled to run into Jessica and her Unicorn Club friends at the mall, even though the Unicorns are the snobbiest, silliest girls on the planet. And when adorable Eric Weinberg moves to Sweet Valley, the twins decide they can both have crushes on him.
The Wakefield twins are determined to keep their resolution. Even if it kills them.
"OK, guys, here's a scorecard for the resolution game," Maria said at lunch the next day. "Everybody gets one."
Elizabeth peered at the paper. There were three columns. The first was labeled Name, the second Resolution, and the third Kill.
"Kill? What's this mean?" she asked, tapping her finger on the third column.
Amy burst into a grin. "I was just thinking. I'd like to be supportive of these resolutions. Like Maria's and yours. But there's a certain person who I don't want to be supportive of at all," she said. "There's a certain person I'm going to try to get out of the game just as soon as possible." Her eyes gleamed.
"A certain person who is rude, obnoxious, self-centered, and a lot of other things, but I ran out of adjectives," Maria went on.
Elizabeth took a quick look at the Unicorner, the table where the Unicorns usually sat. "Janet?" she whispered.
"Got it in one," Maria said, smiling.
Amy mad a gun out of her forefinger and thumb and pointed it at Janet. "ZAP!"
