When Jessica Wakefield started a house-sitting service with her twin sister, Elizabeth, she never imagined their first client would be Mr. Clark, the school principal. Elizabeth is nervous, but Jessica is psyched. She wants some juicy gossip about privat Mr. Clark, and snooping around his house will be a great way to find it.
But Jessica finds more than she bargained for: a butcher knife in the hall closet, and a long lock of black hair in the dresser. Then, in the cobwebs of Mr. Clarks dark, damp basement, something makes Jessica's heart stand still. Jessica always thought Mr. Clark was a pain . . . but could he also be a murderer?
"That's ridiculous!" Elizabeth laughed. She had just finished watering the plants and was pouring the remaining water into the kitchen sink.
Jessica grabbed the watering can from Elizabeth's hand and plopped it on the counter. "Is it?" she challenged, her eyes flashing. "Here are the facts." She started counting off on her fingers. "Mr. Clarks side of the closet is empty. Mrs. Clark's side is full. The room looks like Mr. Clark left in a hurry. Nobody seems to know the other one was leaving. Nobody has a number where they can be reached. The paperboy heard them having an argument. There's a bloddy knife in a closet. There's a clump of hair on the hinge of the basement door. There's blood on the floor in front of the door. And we're not supposed to go into the basement! I'm telling you, Elizabeth, something's not right here. And don't tell me there's a logical explanation for it all." Jessica paced back and forth like a caged animal.
"But-," Elizabeth started to protest.
"It's obvious Mr. Clark has murdered his wife and now he's on the run!" Jessica declared fiercely.
