It's bad enough that my parents treat me like I don't exist. But now Kristin is doing the same thing.
I figures it's probably my fault because I never stand up for myself.
But that's about to change!
"So," Brian said when he was done. "You want to get pizza later? Or we could rent a movie."
I stared at the bowl of pudding on his tray. "Oh, sorry, Brian. I told Lacey I'd go to the mall with her after school." I looked up at him. "You don't mind, do you?" I asked.
Brian frowned. "I thought we made plans," he said. Was I imagining things, or did he look seriously upset?
I shrugged. "We can hang out tomorrow."
"You said today." Brian's eyes were getting darker, I swear. "I thought we had a date," he said. "I even told the guys I couldn't practice after school today because you and I had plans."
"You did?" I asked. "Oh, Brian, you're so nice. Sometimes I wonder if I deserve you. It's like your too nice."
Uh-oh. Brian's eyes were almost black now. In fact, his whole face looked like a thundercloud.
"I'm sorry, Brian," I said. "I could call Lacey and see if she can do it tomorrow."
"Don't bother," he said. He pushed back his chair and stood up. "Too nice, huh? Maybe you're right." Then he stalked over to the garbage can in the corner, dumped his tay, and stormed out of the cafeteria.
I had definately said the wrong thing. But what's wrong with telling someone he's nice?
