Summer's here, and the Wakefield twins can't wait to join Lila Fowler in fabulous, beach-lined Malibu. Elizabeth and Jessica have arranged jobs as mother's helpers and are looking forward to a dream vacation filled with Hollywood stars and gorgeous guys.
But the girls soon find out things aren't always as they seem in sunny Malibu. Elizabeth's heart is won by someone much too old for her. Even though she feels guilty about it, she begins to see him secretly. While Elizabeth tries desperately to keep her sister from finding out, Jessica is busy trying to get bronzed Cliff Sherman to notice her. Can the girls straighten out their summer romances, or will Malibu's magic be only an illusion?
"Jess," Elizabeth said suddenly, "I've changed my mind about Malibu. If you really want to go that badly, I won't hold you back."
The can of soda flew out of Jessica's hand as she dove for her sister, hugging her and shrieking. "Liz, I love you! You're the best sister in the whole world!" she shouted.
"There's only one condition," Elizabeth said, her turquoise eyes serious, "and I really mean it, Jess. You have to take care of all the planning. You have to find the agency and get the jobs and everything. I don't want to end up doing all the work this time. Do you understand?"
Jessica was to ecstatic to let her sister's stern tone upset her. "Don't you worry," she said breathlessly. "I'll do absolutely everything. Just imagin it, we'll both get mother's helpers jobs with really rich families - right on the beach! Hollywood-by-the-sea . . . it's the place to spend the summer, Lia. All the stars have places there. We'll both meet fabulous guys. We'll have the time of our lives."
