The story began in 1866 . . .

Alice stared into the depths of his brown eyes. He brushed a tendril of wet hair off of her forehead with strong, gentle fingers. His face was etched with concern and caring.
Alice managed a weak smile. The young man smiled back, and she couldn't help noticing how handsome he was. She tried to sit up, but she felt drenched to her very core, too heavy to move.
"shh," the young man whispered. Words floowed in a language Alice knew was English, the language of her new home. She didn't recognize most of the words, but she understood the comfirting tones of the young mans words.
She tried to figure out what had happened. There had been a terrible storm. Waves, wind, and - heavens above! There had been a child! The little boy! She sat up a looked around frantically.
There he was, in his mothers arms! He was alive! His mother was smiling warmly at Alice.
The boys father approached and took Alice's hand gently. He pressed it to his heart in a gesture of thanks. Then he turned to the brown-eyed young man. For the first time, Alice noticed that he was as soaked as she was. As the little boys father took the young man's hand and repeated his gesture of thanks, Alice suddenly understood. The young man was the one who had saved the little boys life - and her own! He must have jumped in after her. Alice looked into his eyes again. She owed her life to this handsome man with the beautiful voice - Theodore Wakefield.
