Jack and his younger sister, Ashley, go with their mother who is a veterinarian and their father who is a photographer to Yellowstone Park. The mother has been called to investigate an incident where a hunting dog was chased into the park and killed by a pack of wolves. The dynamics of the children make the book interesting. The children witness a shooting of a wolf and then need to stay with the wolf for fear that the armed man is still around. They stay with the wolf around a fire and tell stories. In the morning they are rescued, the wolf was saved and the mystery is solved.
