Chloroacetic acid was found on March 1, 1840 by S. C. H. Schwindler. Chloroacetic acid is a colorless or white crystal, and has a penetrating odor similiar to vinegar. It can be found in states such as, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida and Massachusetts. It is a Corrosive Chemical. A corrosive substance is a gas, liquid, or solid that causes irreversible damage to human tissue or containers. The main organs it harms is the liver, kidneys, and the central nervous system. Although it is corrosive, it is used to make dyes, detergents, and pharmacueticals.
