The M.V. Frontenac is a 730 foot self-unloader, with Canada Steamship Lines. It travels through the Great Lakes carrying iron ore, coal, and cement to various ports along the lakes. The vessel was constructed by David Shipbuilding and launched at Lauzon, Quebec, on December 12, 1967. The M.V. Frontenac wasn't always a self-unloader, it spent five years as a straight deck bulk carrier then in 1972-1973 it was rebuilt into a self-loader. On April 1st, 1975, at Sault Ste. Marie the Frontenac done something no other vessel on the Great Lakes had ever done before, it ended the 1974 shipping season, proving they could keep the locks open all winter long.
