The set of all first elements of the ordered pairs is called the domain of the relation and is referred to as the independent variable. The set of all the second elements is called the range and is referred to as the dependent variable.
Example: Domain = { 10,12,14,16,18 } Range = { 31, 36, 48, 53, 65 }
The letter X is often used to denote the domain and the letter Y to denote the range.
Example: X = { 10,12,14,16,18 } Y = { 31, 36, 48, 53, 65 }
In many instances a relation is specified in terms of a rule that provides information as to how the elements in the range relate to the elements in the domain.
Example: A relation is defined by the rule y = x + 2, where x e { 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 }.
