New Students St Patty's Day Web

January 17

New Students:

Today I want you to go online and research how to create a good web page.  The following sites are good ones to start with but I would suggest that you use Google to search for others.

http://www.siec.k12.in.us/~west/online/kinds.htm

http://www.useit.com/alertbox/9605.html

http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.asp?p=13000

http://dir.yahoo.com/Arts/Design_Arts/Graphic_Design/Web_Page_Design_and_Layout/Color_Information/

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP051633331033.aspx

Suggested search strings would be:  Web Page Creation, Web Page Colors, Web Page Organization, etc.

I want you to write in your notebooks what you think good design should be based on your research.  You should have this well organized and it should be at least a page of information.  I will grade these tomorrow.

January 24

You should have created a web with four pages (that includes the index page) and they should be linked with a consistent navigation structure.

Change the background color of the index page and of the hyperlink colors.

On all other pages have the program gather the background information from the index page and apply it to these other pages.

Save four pictures for each page and insert them into the table cells.

Auto thumbnail the images.

Be sure that you save the pages after each change.

Preview the web in Internet Explorer often.

February 17, 2005

Create a Frames Based Web.  Name it Frames Web and save it on the P drive.

The web should contain 7 total pages.  This would include the index page and the three pages that are linked to the frames on the index page.  You will need three additional pages that will link to the index page's main frame.

The topic of the web can be on anything that you want (as long as it's appropriate).  You should use table where needed and you should include pictures on your pages.

Se the frame properties so that the frames are not changeable in the browser.

You can leave the frames borders the same size or enlarge them.  You can also remove them if desired.

You can also choose to use a pattern as a background picture on the pages but make sure that you use good judgment if you do this so the pages don't look too busy.

February 23 - Complete the above assignment that deals with a frames based web.

February 24 - First half of class is silent reading (until 8:40).  You should finish your frames based web assignment after that.

College Web

Valentine's Day Web

Other Stuff

College Web

You are to begin a new web dealing with a college.  You need to create the web on the network drive (P:) and call the web COLLEGE WEB.  Make sure that you do NOT create this on the C drive!

You should create the web with the thought in mind that you are promoting this college.  You will need to get information from the school's web site and then you can copy and paste the information into the web your are creating.

Make sure that all fonts are consistent on each page.

The following are requirement for the web:

The web needs to have a frames format of some type.  The web can be totally frames based or you can have part of it frames based.

The use of tables is important for good placement of page elements so use them.

You need to incorporate at least one in-line frame.

You need to use at least one horizontal line that has had its format changed.

You need to make sure that all hyperlink colors are consistent with the school's colors.

Any images must be checked on Photoshop to make sure they are no more that 72 ppi.

The use of hover buttons is optional.

You need to create a "forms page" that will have interactive boxes so people viewing the web can send information (I will go over this in detail with you so don't create this page today).  Also, any forms will have to be added after the web is transferred to Tripod's server as they won't work on a disk based web.

Be sure to view your progress in Internet Explorer often as you create the web!

Valentine's Day Web

Create a Valentine's Day Web that deals with the history of the holiday.

Research information on St. Valentine.

The web can be either frames or non-frames based and in addition to the index (home) page, there should be a minimum of 5 internal links.

A reminder - any external links need to open in a new window so these pages do not open in your web.

The web should be created on the P drive and pages should be copied to the Tripod server.  Make sure that you create the web on the P drive and not the C drive and don't forget to add a web folder name (example:  P:\Vanentine Web).  Before you transfer these files, you should create a folder on the Tripod server in your main folder called Valentine.

This is the folder where the Valentine's web should be pasted.

Make a link to this web from your main web page and be sure to have a link from the start page of the Valentine's web back to your main web.

It is important to check the web in the browser as you create it!

You need to incorporate the following into the web:

At least one animation (don't get carried away because too much is not a good thing).

At least one mouse over.

Tables should be used to give good visual balance to the page elements.

Hide the borders of the tables unless they are needed to help the viewer follow information across the page.

Consistent colors in the web with hyperlink colors that are different from the default.

Page titles on each page (other than NEW PAGE_1, for example).

When you are finished, copy and paste the web to the Tripod server.  Follow the directions that I have posted on the web if you need help doing this.

February 7, 2005 - all students:  Click the following link to review how color on a web page affects the viewer of the page.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010429371033.aspx

After reading this information, create a web page on the Tripod server in your root directory that outlines what you learned from this reading.  You will need a link to this page from you main index page and the link should read:  Color Outline, Feb 7, 2005.  There should be a link on the outline page that takes you back to your index page.

Use good placement on the outline page.  Give this page a title that relates to the purpose of the page and save it as color outline.

Feb 23, 2005

Complete any webs that are not completed.  Go to http://www.dynamicdrive.com and go to the document effects link.  Choose the snow effect link.  Read the directions.  Create a new page in one of your webs and try to get this effect to work on the new page.

Feb 24, 2005

Silent reading until 8:40.  Complete any webs not finished.  If you are done, you have free time.

Feb 28, 2005

Try to figure out how to get the annoying banner ads on your Tripod pages to appear at the bottom instead of at the top of the pages.  This is an extra credit assignment and I will base the credit on you showing me one of your pages that you have successfully achieved this on. (Hint - you must edit in HTML view to do this.)

HTML Web

Students should research HTML coding on the Internet and start putting a web together that details your research  The purpose is to become more familiar with HTML and how to edit your pages with it.  You can create the web in a frames or non frames format (or you can incorporate frames into the web) but you should organize the web page elements with the use of tables.  You don't have to have the borders of the tables visible, but if you do, the assets in the table should be properly placed for the best visual appearance.

The web should be created on the P drive in a new folder called CODE and you should save all you files there (with the exception of the response page)..  This will be the primary work site where your pages and elements are saved.  Towards the end of the hour, you should open another copy of FrontPage and copy and paste from the P drive to the Tripod drive.  This will be part of the grade for this web, to have a "mirror" of the web on the P drive.

You should preview your work in Internet Explore often so you can get a more accurate picture of how the web will actually look.

The web should have at least 4 informational pages.  If you are using a frames format, the links page and a header or footer page would not count as part of the four.  Also, the response page and confirmation pages do not count as part of the four- they are in addition to the four.  Your response page must link to a confirmation page that you create.  You will need to use at least one web component in the web.  Remember that tables should be used and the borders should be removed unless they are necessary to help the viewers read information or you are using decorative borders to enhance the table's appearance on the page.

New Second Semester Students

Create a web on St. Patrick's Day.  The web can contain information on the history of the day, St. Patrick, Ireland, etc.

You are to create a new web on the P drive called St Pat's.

This web is to be created in a frames format.

In addition to the index page that holds the frames and the pages that will initially appear when the web is opened, you need four more pages of information that will appear in the main frame of the index page.

All the links from the left pane of the index page need to be targeted so the pages they are linked to will open in the main frame.

If you have any links to external web sites that you didn't create, you need to target those links to open in a different window.

Make sure that the colors for the (backgrounds, fonts, etc) are coordinated well.

Use fonts that are easy to read and are consistent.

If you use patterns or pictures for backgrounds, be sure to adjust the image so it does not tile and that the opacity is reduced to at least 50%.  This needs to be done in Photoshop.

Use a marquee on a page.

Each day transfer this web to the Tripod server.  If you need information on how to do this click here.
