I find that I am always thinking of new things and new ways to experiment and create. I like to involve mixed media: drawings, scanned images, photographs, and graphics. My favorite program to use is Photoshop because I can really use the tools to alter images. Photoshop is great for layering and changing the contrast and color of photographs. If somebody asked me what I like best about my work, I would answer “My ability to layer and collage.” Though I enjoy doing collage, I know that in some cases it may not be appropriate. The design must work for the client. It is important that the graphics represent the subject accurately.

Back in my very first photography class, I experimented. I tore and collaged my photos. I tore and collaged because, while everyone around me was just pulling prints and leaving them the way they were originally, I was doing something different. To me, collage is very creative because it has so much going on in the design. There is so much to look at in a collage. For example, the way paper is ripped, what images are shown, the different layers, and so on. I enjoy collage work and layering because when I create it I feel that I am putting a piece of myself into the work. My life is like a collage, a collage of memories, a collage of people and places, a collage of experiences, a collage of sound, and more.

One of the things that inspire my work is music. I would listen to it and let the sound and lyrics take me away into a different world. Music helps me to imagine, and it helps me to create. Listening to it can change the way one feels and the mood of a moment. It all depends on what notes are
being played, if it is loud or quiet, the melody, the beat, the instruments, and the voice. There are endless possibilities with music. For me, endless possibilities with music mean endless possibilities with imagination.

I would like people to see my work and think, “Wow, that’s something different.” I don’t want my work to be the average advertisement or the average poster. The color, text, and layout all must stand out and bring something unique to the viewers. I want people to take a double look and think about it. I want my work to be like music and create a world for the audience who is willing to enter.
