Look for belt cracks The serpentine or V-ribbed engine belt drives the water pump, power steering pump, air conditioner compressor, alternator and fan (if it's not electric). When the belt on a serpentine drive breaks, it's the equivalent of as many as three regular V-belts breaking at the same time. Without the belt, the accessory drives won't work. Auto experts recommend changing serpentine belts every four years, regardless of appearance. They should be inspected at 60,000 miles.

WHAT IT DOES

• Drive belts and pulleys transfer engine power to accessories such as power steering, the air conditioner, water pump and alternator.
• The timing belt controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves.
• Radiator & heater hoses carry coolant to the engine and heater core.
• The fuel hose transports gasoline for the tank to the engine.
• Power Steering hose connects the power steering pump to the steering gear
