The man called Destro's lineage stretches back to the 1600s, where his family were reputable suppliers in Europe. One of his descendents was punished for his transgressions and forced to wear a steel mask over his face. Choosing to wear a mask with pride rather than humiliation, it became tradiation throughout his family, each head of the clan donning the mask. They later established what would one day become M.A.R.S., Military Armaments Research Syndicate, the largest manufacturer of weaponry and state-of-the-art technology in the world.
After his father's death, James McCullen Destro XXIV became the latest head of M.A.R.S. One of his highest paying and most frequent clients was Cobra Commander, leader of the terrorist organization called Cobra. Almost immediately upon hiring Destro, Cobra Commander regretted his decision to allow him to take part in Cobra missions. His obvious prior relationship with Cobra agent, the Baroness, and superior tactical skills caused Cobra Commander to consider him a threat to his rule.
