Shawn Vincent can never remember a time in his life when he was happy. Sure, there are the occasional moments of fun or spurts of bliss, but he has never been truly happy. He has been an orphan since as far back as he can remember, and he knows that it is because he is a mutant. When he was younger he used to get picked on about it, kids would call him "Red Eyes" and for a while it bothered him; however, when Shawn was 11 things changed, he joined the Lords of Paragon, one of the hardest street gangs in Paragon City, and that's when the torment stopped. Growing up alone, he didn't have any real examples to go by, and his moral fiber was thin, to say the least. Shawn would do anything that the higher-ups asked him to do: steal, run drugs, even stab someone. When he was 14, things changed for him again.

Shawn began to become incredibly strong and fast for someone his age. His mutant powers had started to manifest themselves. He also began to realize that with his enhanced physical ability that he could earn some respect. He started by fighting one-on-one with other gang members in no-holds barred fights that the other members would bet on. He never lost a fight. After gaining enough prestige as a fighter, he decided that he shouldn't stop there; Shawn began to gain a small following, and he started to rise in rank in the L.O.P. After two years of this pattern, Shawn approached the 5 warlords of the gang, the men who were responsible for the gang itself. He wanted to be a warlord.

At 16 he managed to become an L.O.P. warlord by brutally beating one of the current warlords inorder to take his spot. Shawn turned the gang from a bunch a hoods with no direction into an organized band of street soldiers.

Everything was running rather smoothly for him, until a huge threat to the Lords of Paragon emerged: The Freakshow. The Freakshow was a gang of punk-rockers that had wreaked havoc in the streets of Paragon, but never had any real power. The Freakshow remerged with superpowers and came on the scene in the upper-east side of Paragon and claimed dominance as the premier street gang; after all, who could stop them? L.O.P. members and members of various other gangs fought the Freakshow daily, but were always slaughtered. Things became so bad that most of Paragon City’s top gangs, despite hate for each other, banded together to fight the Freakshow. Malice realized that he was finally going to fight people that presented a challenge to him. He loved the idea.

All of the meetings and fights had come to a head, and both sides agreed that the only solution was an all out war. During the rumble, Shawn became angered at the way his comrades were being beaten, and his anger made him stronger. He had become strong enough to tear through multiple Freakshow members, and he did just that, crushing the super-powered thugs. During the fight Malice began to clash with Dreck, the Freakshow's leader, to an apparent standstill, but absorbed so much kinetic energy during the fight, that he lost control of himself and released the energy in a huge explosion, decimating the entire city block. He would later refer to this energy release as "popping".

When he came to, he was strapped in a hospital bed and approached by a female FBI agent who gave him a choice: go to jail for an extremely long time or use his powers for good, and join a government-sponsored super hero team called the Justice Corps. He made the smart choice. The woman revealed that she was really a heroine named Flash Point (named so because her power was to teleport with a blinding flash of light), and that she would be his teammate and his supervisor; however, the two would develop a much deeper relationship.

Shawn joined the Justice Corps as a junior member; a.k.a. a sidekick. Shawn was given the name Liberty and spent one full year as the sidekick to the hero known as Captain Righteous, co-leader of the Corps. Shawn found Captain Righteous hokey, and saw his methods of crime fighting as outdated; the two had absolutely nothing in common, and constantly argued over the others actions. On many occasions, Flash Point and the other members had to stop the two from coming to blows. He began to realize that sidekicks were generally ignored in decision making and he wanted very badly to freelance, but he knew that he had a debt to repay to society and a gift with which to repay it. Shawn would later find the motivation he needed to split from the “mainstream-hero racket” as he calls it.

On a routine mission hunting down a cell of Fifth Column terrorists, Shawn, Captain Righteous, Flash Point and a few other team members managed to enter into an underground training base. In the ensuing battle, the Fifth Column members were badly defeated, but their leader, a man known as the Red Eye managed to escape down a tunnel. Malice pursued him, despite objections from Captain Righteous and the others. When Malice did happen to find the Red Eye, who was in a suit of mechanical armor; not knowing Shawn's powers, the villain began to taunt him, openly explaining the mantras and beliefs of the Nazis. Needless to say, Shawn was furious; his powers were at their peak, and he had heard enough, he tore the mechanical armor apart and began to pitilessly beat the man, despite his lack of super powers. The other Justice Corps members begged him to stop, but Shawn explained that if he allowed the Red Eye to live that the cycle would continue and his ideas would continue to spread.

Captain Righteous commanded him to stop “at once” and explained that he was the hero and Shawn was the sidekick. Shawn looked at Captain Righteous and grinned, a wide grin which was followed by “Are you serious?” Captain Righteous was deeply angered by the remark and blurted out “This is why you will NEVER be a real hero: no discipline.” Shawn became even more infuriated, and before anyone else could try and quell the situation, the two were engaged in fisticuffs.

After fighting for some time, Shawn was beginning to feel strange, and he fell to his knees. Captain Righteous looked at him and asked if he had had enough (truth be told, the Captain was losing the fight badly). Shawn looked up and told everyone to run, they complied, and the resulting explosion eventually destroyed the entire Fifth Column base. Flash Point, who had fled with the others had teleported back inside the tunnels to get Shawn, and was caught in the ensuing explosion, her body was never found.

Grief stricken over the fact that he had killed his girlfriend, he went into a state of deep depression. The higher-ups in the Justice Corps were furious; there was no evidence left, nor any Fifth Column survivors from the raid. Shawn was approached about the incident several times, but he walked away from the questioner each time, unwilling to talk about the situation. Most of the older heroes were shocked by the audacity that he displayed, but a few found his attitude refreshing, and they backed him 100 percent; still, he was put up for review by the leaders of the Corps.

Before a judgment could be come to, Shawn proposed a speech in front of the entire Justice Corps. All of his teammates assumed that he would apologize…instead he declared that his name was no longer Liberty, because he wasn’t receiving any of it from the Justice Corps. He also denounced the Justice Corps as too traditional and abusive of it’s younger members, and he swore that he would never again be anyone’s sidekick, even if that meant that he had to fight alone, and referred to his former mentor, Captain Righteous, as a “super powered a-hole with a cape, on a serious ego trip,” and that if given the chance "[he] would kick his soft ass again."

A still angst-ridden Shawn, now known as Malice because it better suits his powers (and his attitude sometimes), is currently free-lancing, fighting crime and corruption in the slums of Paragon City, but he is definitely willing to join a team, as long as he's nobody's sidekick.
