Comic Reviews for September 4, 2002

Starting this week, reviews will be posted on either Saturdays or Sundays. Blame school. I got to do it though.

Alias 14 *Pick of the Week*
Come Home, Rebecca - By Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos; Published by Marvel Comics/MAX imprint

Jessica finds Rebecca in the next town over and listens to her story. They come back to find out the aunt did in Rebecca's father. They talk some more and Rebecca leaves town again.

Its Bendis. Nuff said.

Score: 9/10

Exiles 17
Wild Life Reserve - By Judd Winick, Jim Calafiore and Eric Cannon; Published by Marvel Comics

The Exiles enter a world where Dr. Connors injects himself - and half of California - with his reptile serum. The team prevents him from exploding a bomb that'll destroy most of the reptile creatures.

The same goes for this again this month. Great characterization and art, but the plot remains a little iffy. Definitely better, though, than in recent months.

Score: 7/10

Green Arrow 16
The Archer's Quest Chapter One: Photograph - By Brad Meltzer, Phil Hester and Ande Parks; Published by DC Comics

Ollie goes to his old tombstone, where Clark Kent gives him some photos of his funeral. He finds a villain amongst those pictures, which leads him and Arsenal to the baddies house, only to find another guy there waiting in the wings.

Meltzer starts out his run very strongly, as he leads Ollie on a quest that looks to be very interesting. Hopefully in the next couple of issues Meltzer will flesh out the story some more. It'll take those issues to see whether or not he's made out for comics. Thus far, very good. Hester and Parks put in a strong performance.

Score: 8/10

Hellspawn 13
Hellworld: Part One - By Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith; Published by Image Comics

Hellspawn is invited to become ruler of Hell. After much deliberation, he takes the crown.

Hmm...what the hell? Very strange indeed, and I wish this book would come out more than four times a year. That way, I would know what's happening. Just too much stuff I couldn't really care about this month, though Spawn taking the crown is intruiging.

Score: 5/10

Marvel Mangaverse 6
Liberty's Doom: Part Three of Three - By Kevin Gunstone and Ben Dunn; Published by Marvel Comics

Everyone fights many things this issue, and in the end, the Scarlet Witch avenges Captain America by killing Dr. Doom.

Yup, it's that simple this month. A bit of a mess, though, with all the fighting and the characters just jumping around being, well, who knows. That's all it really is this month. I'll be happy to see the Spider-Man one next month though.

Score: 6/10

Neon Genesis Evangelion Part 7 No. 4
A Man's Battle - By Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Created by GAINAX, Translated by Fred Burke; Published by Viz Communications

Rei takes a crack at Zeruel with a N2 bomb, only to be defeated by the Angel. Meanwhile, the dummyplug is rejected by Unit-01, and Shinji jumps into the battle just as the Angel enters Central Dogma.

Action packed issue, nicely done. A bit rushed, but overall very nice. I like the art as well, though I finally have a reason to hate "flopped books".

Score: 7/10

New X-Men 131
Some Angels Falling - By Grant Morrison, John Paul Leon and Bill Sienkiewicz; Published by Marvel Comics

Xavier and others go to Darkstar's funeral. Meanwhile, Archangel teaches a flying class and Scott and Emma get around to "therapy".

Various things this issue, all told nicely. I like the way the Scott/Emma issue plot is going. Very uncliche. The interaction between the Beak and Angel is good, giving some development to them. Good overall issue. Leon's art is great.

Score: 8/10

Punisher 15
The Exclusive - By Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson and Nelson; Published by Marvel Comics/Marvel Knights imprint

The Punisher goes on a tour with some guy who wants an exclusive. Cue mayhem and other explosive goodies.

Not really good as it's been the last couple months. Might be that damn small print lettering. Who knows. Something didn't fit though, and the story fell short in the end. Not real big on Robertson's art either.

Score: 6/10

--
Sabretooth 4
Mary Shelly Overdrive - By Dan Jolley and Greg Scott; Published by Marvel Comics

Creed takes on everyone, and kills everyone, including the girl he was boinking.

Same shit. Though the ending was a bit nice, giving Creed some sympathy. In the end, though, it's still a quick story with no point and uneven art.

Score: 6/10

There are two other books that I will do next week. I just want to get this out now. Those books, by the way, are Uncanny X-Men and Ultimate Spider-Man. Next week looks to be a bit light, which is good. Until then, peace.
