Comic reviews for July 31, 2002

Ahh...short week again. How nice.

30 Days of Night 2
By Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith; Published by IDW Publishing
More horror fun from Niles, as most of the town is dead and the few remaining souls are hiding out from the vampires, hoping for the sun to finally rise. Truly gripping stuff, both in writing and in art. Definitely get this series if you can.

Score: 8/10

Dark Knight Strikes Again Part 3
By Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, Published by DC Comics
Long awaited conclusion to the mini. More of a mixed bag in this one. I'm not truly liking Miller's art. I really liked it better in the first mini series. It's Varley's computer coloring that does this though. The story is a bit more straight forward this time, and Miller ties up everything nicely. I'm leaning towards the story with the grade for this one.

Score: 7/10

Gundam: The Origin 2
By Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, Translated by Mark Simmons; Published by Viz Communications
Amuro Ray pilots the Gundam 02 Unit and helps with the colony's evacuation. Before they can escape, they have to get around Zeon Forces led by Char Aznable. Story remains exciting and fun. The art is a tiny bit confusing at times, but is good overall. Solid.

Score: 7/10

Lone Wolf 2100 3
Shadows on Saplings Part 3 of 4 - By Mike Kennedy and Francisco Ruiz Velasco; Published by Dark Horse Comics
Itto begins his search for Daisy and runs into a bit of resistence. Solid story overall, with some flashback moments filling in key parts of the plot. Art is great, though the coloring is a tad dark at times. Good stuff.

Score: 8/10

Neon Genesis Evagelion Part 7 No. 3
Atonement - By Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Created by GAINAX, Translated by Fred Burke
Kaji finishes his story to Shinji while Asuka fights a losing battle against the current Angel. Lot of stuff this issue, too much to explain here. The art suffers slightly during the fight scenes but is good overall. Rather good.

Score: 7/10

X-Statix 1 *POTW*
Good Omens Part One: Edie Sawyer Saved My Life - Art by Mike Allred
Code X - Art by Darwyn Cooke; Both written by Peter Milligan; Published by Marvel Comics
Best book of the week right here, as the relaunch team begins it's search for new members. Very nice introduction to Venus Dee Milo. The team is still in conflict, which is nice to see. Back up strip is good. Great stuff overall.

Score: 9/10

You know, I expected X-Statix to be the last relaunched book to review. Soldier X is two weeks late and Agent X is a week late. Damn. Look for both of those next week.
I picked up Evangelion: Death and Rebirth yesterday on DVD. Very nice. The preview for End of Evangelion is truly breathtaking. Any fan of this series should get it.
Sorry for the rush job this week. I just needed to get it out of the way. Next week I'll try to me more comprehensive in my reviews. Until then, peace.
