Comic Reviews for May 30, 2002
Short week this week. I'm glad that it is. Next week is a bitch though, more on that in a moment.
Amazing Spider-Man 41
Looking Back - By J. Michael Straczynski, John Romita Jr., and Scott Hanna; Published by Marvel
Hmm...where to start. Nothing bad with this issue at all, honestly. The main plot is on a slight back burner for the advancement of...well, the main plot. The villain isn't seen in this issue at all, except in flashback. There are also several nice subplots with Mary Jane and Aunt May abound, all very nicely done. The art is great as usual. Good issue all told.
Score: 7/10
Blade 3
V3s - By Christopher Hinz and Steve Pugh; Published by Marvel
Erm...right. How bout we do this? Abandon the plot for some rather sorry plot advancements. Yeah...that doesn't work. Rather head scratching to an extent. It's one of those middle-issue-lulls in the plot. I might forgive if the issue wasn't this bad. Art's rather iffy in some spots. Hack-n-slay, if only there was something more to it.
Score: 3/10
Elektra 10
Unemployment - By Greg Rucka and Joe Bennett; Published by Marvel
This, my friend's, is called 'Self Contained Pile of What the Crap is Going On Here?'. Elektra is walking around New York City and, well, does some things that I really don't understand. And that damn preview made it sound so much more interesting. Might as well put this in some detail. Elektra goes to New York, gets a hotel, gets some tickets for a opera, hands them to a bum...you ctach my drift? Right, you do. Art's nice though.
Score: 5/10
X-Force 128
Someone Dies - By Peter Milligan and Mike Allred; Published by Marvel
Well...someone died. Look at the friggin title! The friggin title!! Oh, the story. The thing I truly love about this book is the unpredictability of it. Just when you think one person dies, it goes and pulls a complete 360 on your ass. Honestly, I wasn't expecting this person to die. It's sad to see this character go (you think I'm gonna tell you?), but it's done excellently. The art is what really makes this book work. I'm happy to say that this truly is my favorite book. Not just for the week, mind you. Well...yeah, not just for the week. Great stuff.
Score: 9/10
X-Men Evolution 7
Beast of Burden - By Devin Grayson and UDON; Published by Marvel
Well, it's a good story. Honestly. The new recruits have joined the institute and play a little baseball. There's a lot of nice interation between the kids, and all told, the story plays out nicely. I'm still not a fan of UDON's art in this one. Their work in Deadpool is much better.
Score: 7/10
Next week is a whopper. 'The Filth', Grant Morrison's pet project from Vertigo, starts next week. Also starting next week is the first 'Call of Duty' mini from Marvel, and '30 Days of Night' from IDW Publishing. My Evil Half is going to start collecting 'Alias' and 'Ultimate Spider-Man' next week. Overall, 12 books will be out. Ouch. Oh well. Enjoy the rest of the week. Peace.
