Comic reviews for May 22, 2002
Short week...let's begin.
Deadpool 67
Buddy Picture - By Gail Simone and UDON; Published by Marvel
Rhino is a keychain. A bloody keychain. Well DP doesn't look like he's getting worse, at least not at first glance. Taskmaster gets a call, advancing the overall arc plot. As for the issue at hand, DP saves Dazzler. Nice little story, with good humor moments. Ratbag is becoming a bit non-sequiter. Other than that, a joy to come back and read everyone month.
Score: 7/10
The Hood 1
Blood From Stones - By Brian K. Vaughan and Kyle Hotz; Published by Marvel
Latest release from Marvel's MAX line, a small time hoodlem comes across a hood which gives him some kind of strange powers. We've only seen flight, but it's too early to tell what else it has. It takes it's time to develop the story, but the characters thus far are nicely developed. There isn't a central plot yet to work off of, other than 'small time hoodlem finds hood'. Arts pretty nice though. Can't complain.
Score: 8/10
Lone Wolf 2100 1
Shadows on Saplings 1 of 4 - By Mike Kennedy and Francisco Ruiz Velasco; Published by Dark Horse
I went off the judgement about reviews of this magna called 'Lone Wolf and Cub'. Getting good reviews, I went on a hunch (I have many hunches) and decided to pick this up. I have to say, this is good. The plot is pretty basic: a warrior is protecting a kid from some type of evil corporation in the future (hence the 2100 in the title). Trust me, it's better than it sounds. I rate this a little higher than I usually do, but that'll easily give it the pick of the week. Still, I do what I must do.
Score: 9/10
Midnight, Mass. 2
The Edge of Civilization Part One - By John Rozum, Jesús Saiz and Jimmy Palmiotti; Published by DC/Vertigo
I scratch my head and wonder: why does it take half an issue to get to what is going on around here? The good, at least, come with the character development and the art. But this plot...it's bugging me. I hope that the story after this one doesn't follow this one like it is. Cause that would make me mad. Mad isn't good. The story, though, is quite good. Just the way it's going...I really don't know. I'll still collect this though, since it's only 8 issues. Something good better come from it though.
Score: 5/10
Origin 6
Dust to Dust - By Paul Jenkins, Bill Jemas, Joe Quesada, Andy Kubert and Richard Isanove; Published by Marvel
Another head scratching. I really don't know. Origin, Origin, Origin. Started off good, but just dropped off the map with the delays in shipping and the way the story went. Same with this...in both ways. This, of course, was due back January 30th. It's nearly 4 months later, and the story is still average. Dog shows up, causes trouble. Oh, and Rose dies. Now, pay close attention here. There is a cage fight, and the way Rose dies. Tell me this doesn't remind you of something. One guess. Yeah, that damn movie, where Wolverine fights in a cage, and Rose gets stabbed the same way as Rogue does in the movie. Now, if the movie was good, I'd let it slide. But I can't. I'll stop that now, since it's the comic. Obvious points not with standing, the comic isn't good. Like I said, Dog shows up, causes trouble. Dog isn't dead, and Logan runs off into the woods. Oh, and I do think Dog is Sabretooth, though those claw scars say otherwise. Thank God the spending is over. Oh, the arts good. Nothing much else to go by.
Score: 5/10
Well that was a load off of my chest. Next week looks to be light again. Five I think. If you care to know, I looked through that Spider-Man/Jay Leno serial, and I just want you to know that it is simply bad. God awful. I've ran out of evil ways to blast the serial, cause it was simply horrible. I didn't read any of The Call, though I'll get to that soon. There's two new serials running now I think, so I'll get to those soon enough. Enjoy your week, and I'll see you again soon. Peace.
