Professor Gerald Robotnik, Dr Eggman’s grandfather, created Shadow 50 years ago as his revenge for the death of his granddaughter, Maria Robotnik, by the hands of G.U.N.s forces when they invaded Ark.Shadow's memories of Maria, were also created by the professor to help him carry out his mission of destruction.
Before Shadow could complete his mission, he was apparently captured and was sealed in a special prision called Iron Gate. Dr Eggman released him 50 years after he was created. Upoun hearing Eggman's name, Shadow then told Dr Eggman that he would help him take over the Earth. Little did Eggman know, Shadow was actually planning to destroy Earth, using Arks powerful weapon, the Eclipse Cannon. Soon Shadow encounters Sonic and fought him for the chaos emeralds. Shadow also soon met up with Rouge the bat, a treasure hunter, who joins up with Shadow and Eggman to get the chaos emeralds for herself and secretly working for the president. Shadow continued to be the villain for most of the adventure until Amy Rose finally reminded him of the real promise he made to Maria.

Shadow, realizing the mistakes he made went to help Sonic and Knuckles stop the chaos emeralds. But before he could he confront the Bio-Lizard, a prototype of the ultimate life-form. Thinking he defeated Bio-Lizard, Shadow joined Sonic and the gang. Bio-Lizard then took over the colony's control and kept it on its course to hit Earth. Sonic and Shadow responded by using the emeralds to become their more powerful forms. Super Sonic and Hyper Shadow. After the second fight with Bio-Lizard, Shadow seemed to have used up the last of his power and fell to Earth. If he is alive know one seems to know. One thing is known ... he kept his promise.
