This is the very first Opus N' Andy comic. It's not really a cartoon. All it originally was was a doodle I did of Opus the penguin (from Berke Breathed's 'Bloom County' and 'Outland") holding his tuba. You can tell by the lined paper it's on that I never intended it to be anything more than a doodle. I decided it would be funny to draw a member of the Huskie Band tuba section looking down at Opus, kind of saying with his expression, 'Who the hell is that?!'. The natural choice for the tuba player was our then, easy to draw, band president, Andy Rollins (who, no offence to later band presidents, was the most fun band president we ever had). After looking at my new drawing I thought, 'Hmm... Opus and Andy. Opus N' Andy. Amos and Andy. Aha!' and wrote down the silly little title at the top. To top the drawing off I decided to add another band member, to make it look like a parade or something. Vanity told me to add myself. Yes, that's me with the clarinet. For those of you who didn't know me in 1989, I played the clarinet instead of the baritone or trumpet and I didn't wear glasses yet. Lastly, the copyright information at the bottom of the page comes from an idea, at one point, to sell a compilation of my cartoons. I figured if I was going to do that, I needed to give the original creator of one of the characters credit. I later decided against the idea, but the copyright remains.
