Kikyou was a Miko who protected the Shikon no Tama from evil youkai, who wanted its power to become more powerful. Kikyou was purifying the Shikon no Tama so that it could be used for good.
Inuyasha wanted the Shikon no Tama so that he could become a true youkai.
Kikyou and Inuyasha later fell in love when she did not finish him off in battle saying, that they were a lot of like, and because he was human she could not kill him.
Kikyou was going to use the Shikon no Tama to make Inuyasha become human. They had wanted to live together as humans, that had been their dream....but it was not to be...
On the day they were supposed to use the Shikon no Tama's powers, they were both tricked by an evil youkai, named Naraku, who convinced Inuyasha to attack Kikyou's village and retrieve the Shikon no Tama.
Kikyou was fatally wounded in the battle, but before she died she sealed Inuyasha away in an eternal sleep.
Kikyou had the Shikon no Tama burned with her body she could have used the power of the Shikon no Tama to save herself, but she didn't....she chose to die...
Inuyasha and Kikyou do meet again though.... but to tell you how and why would ruin the plot....
