Resident Evil Zero
Gamecube
Capcom - 2002
Resident Evil 0, which I will call "Zero" because I'm lazy but not lazy enough to use the 0, was
pretty much what one would expect. Being made by Capcom, it feels a lot like Redux (RE for
Gamecube). This being the case, I will give only a short description of the general flow of the
game, focusing more on what sets it apart.
Zero is a prequel to Resident Evil. For all those illiturates out there, this means the events
in the aptly named Zero come before the events in RE 1. The reason this was done was to answer
the questions Resident Evil fans have pondered for many years now, such as: . . . What the poti?
I actually didn't have any questions because I've only played Redux.
The gameplay can be pretty frustrating. The game is played from a third person perspective and
the controls are set up relative to the character. What this means is that up is always
forward, down is backward (not turn around, but back up) and right and left rotate right and
left without walking. While this lets you run away well, by just holding up, it makes it
frustrating to move about a room. Eventually you'll get used to this, however, and be unable to
play other games for about a week.
What I liked: It was scary. We didn't think it was as scary as Redux, but that might
be because we were better prepared for this one. Regardless, the game gets pretty tense and
will make you jump plenty. I also liked the 2-person system. It could have been a disaster but
Capcom pulled it off.
What I disliked: The controls are still pretty friggin' awkward. Though you get used
to them, and they make the camera angles possible, they are still annoying.
What to expect: Scary! I think that's what we said to expect from Redux, too. But it
is still true. If it weren't scary it would be called Onimusha, with guns instead of swords,
and a girl as- nevermind.
What not to expect:Good controls. This really needs to be fixed. Also, don't expect
Jill. She does not show up in the game and Rebecca is much younger . . . though still legal.
What? You're sick.
What sets it apart from the genre: The two characters thing. I don't know of any
games where you actually control two cahracters simultaneously.
Ratings on:
Controls: 5 - You get used to them but they are still frustrating.
Graphics: 10 - At least as good as Redux. The backgrounds are actually better, with
more motion in them.
Sound: 9 - As with horror movies the sound makes the game as scary as it is and this
game is very scary. That being said, silence can be just as frightening. The voice acting was
pretty darn good but sometimes felt a little stiff.
Style: 3 - The two characters and the beautiful presentation make this game very
impressive, although unoriginal.
1st hour: 8 - ooOOoo! Pretty. Everthing is moving.
5th hour: 8 - I just broke my wrist trying to control both characters.
3rd day: 9 - Just as good as redux.
1st week: 8 - Leech hunter is pretty fun. So is replaying the game
3rd week: 7 - Must get 100 leeches.
#1 thing I hate about this game: That stupid puzzle with the "weak" spirits. Who
reads the plaques that carefully?!
