Incredible Crisis
PSX
Titus/Polygon Magic - 2000
Incredible Crisis good. Amazing trouble. Extraordinary problem. Wonderful emergency. Small-games together making big game. Ridonculous plot. Grandma's birthday for dinner. Find house before after dinner. All of family must be home: mother, father, daughter, son. Battle giant teddy bear with rocket plane. Save child from spider. Attempt at rubbing woman's back. Become steering gurney near cars. Road fighter steps donkeys. Sillinessness often finded all places from beginning to last. Godzilla is good.
Don't buy Incredible Crisis if you are seeking anything deeper than the enjoyment given by an absolutely ridiculous Japanese movie. This game is a compilation of the most basic mini-games imaginable. Playing the game, it seems as though the mini-games were put in order first, then the plot was written to connect them all. It's kind of like a mad libs plot, where had programmers shout out random verbs or nouns to put in the next section. Or maybe they had three dart boards set up. One had the family members, one had a bunch of verbs and the other had a bunch of nouns and phrases. They would throw a dart at each board and then make a game out of whatever they got:
"Ok, boys, here we go. Throw the darts."
*THUNK*
"I got 'daughter.' We are using the girl in this one. Next dart."
*THUNK*
"I hit 'playing.' Alright, Timmy, tell us what she is playing with." (snicker)
"Ok, here I go."
*Whiff*
"HA HA HA, Timmy missed, HA HA"
"Shut up, Simon!"
"How could you miss? It was three feet in front of you!"
"I said, shut UP! KI-YAH!"
*SQUISH*
"AAAHHHH! Ow! Ow! You hit me in the eye you maniac!"
"HA HA, I hit Simon, she's playing Simon, HA HA."
What I liked: It is super goofy. The whole game is just ridiculous, but fun. It's completely made up of minigames, which rarely involve more than hitting X a lot. The music is good, too. Incredible Crisis has a ska soundtrack which suits the game perfectly. It's done by Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, who currently have the number one record in Japan and play a mean cover of the Tetris theme.
What I didn't like: Repeating the bail the water stage. It got very old. The other stages weren't that bad. Also, although the stages were very entertaining, the game does lack substance.
What to expect: Minigames, very simple minigames. While the games are pretty varied, they usually don't stray too far from dodging things coming at you. Also, sometimes you can't really understand the instructions and have to suffer through the level until you figure it out. Regardless, it is very enjoyable: this is a good game with friends or alone.
What not to expect: Don't expect a very long or involving game. This game is full of tinier games. While each one is fun and all, they don't come to fruition in the end with the minigame to end all others. You just get a silly ending that fits the silly story.
What sets it apart: It isn't really part of a genre, but it certainly doesn't deserve its own. It falls into the category of goofy Japanese games. Other than the goofy, this game has nothing special.
Ratings On:
Control: 10 - You usually end up pushing X really fast. Not very complicated. No problems.
Graphics: 6 - Pretty standard for PSX. The faces were quite good though.
Sound: 8 - The second best game soundtrack I've ever heard. The sound effects were very basic but fit well. I really liked the screams.
Style: 4 - No breakthrough in the actual gameplay, however, the way the games were put together was quite entertaining. The very colorful, upbeat presentation helped keep you playing through the most frustrating levels.
1st hour: 8 - It's just so ridiculous! What is going on?
2nd hour: 7 - Stays fun but no improvement. You have probably beaten it by now.
3rd hour: 6 - If it took you this long to beat it, you probably stopped having fun. If you already beat it, play it again before the novelty wears off.
4th hour: 4 or 6 - You should just quit. OR You're playing it again.
1st week: 6 - Maybe some friends came over and you beat it again for kicks.
#1 thing I hate about this game: The bailing water out of the boat stage, THE 3RD TIME!!
