Kinda hard to limit to 10... tell you what I’ll do, I’ll start with the
list I gave you in march ‘98, give you my comments on their current status,
and add some new titles, and then maybe attempt to give you a list of my
fav books. BTW this is in no particular order
*The Tenth - Is pretty cool. Every single issue is enjoyable, thought he multiple inkers and colorists can take it’s tole.
*Divine Right - It’s not as fun as it was but still a nice book.
*Darkchylde - well... I don’t really like this incarnation of Randy Queen’s
art, in some ways he has evolved, but I still like his style in the first 3
issues of the original series much more. The story is not as exciting
either. :(
*BattleChasers - One of my absolute favs, I just Love Mad’s artwork. Story
is picking up. The only negative point is it’s lateness. I’ve gone over
this countless times, I’m glad that they are taking their time making sure
that they put out a quality product, and I don’t mind waiting for top
quality, but I must admit all this waiting can be frustrating. :(
*Crimson - Stories are ok, Ramos’ art is also ok but could be better. At
least it’s realetively on time. :P
*Danger Girl - First issues were better, still nice though. Lateness issue...
*Glory - This I believe is another book with great potential. I was looking forward to the new series with Brandon Peterson and Richard Isanove, but we got screwed when Awesome’s financial backer backed away with the publishing rights. If they bring in a good penciller and keep Moore as the writter, the book still might be able to succeed. As much as enjoy Glory and Spellcaster I’m not going to buy the "Allies" book because it’s art but Liefeld, yuck!
*The Coven - Well, there has been one issue out for ages, and #1 of volume 2 is late. I’ve always enjoyed the stories and I really like Ian Churchill’s pencils. But I can’t really pronounce myself on this title as there is no recent material. But from what I’ve seen I don’t like Phantom’s new haircut, it looks like crap!
*Fathom - I really like it. Turner’s art is just beautiful, quite refresing from his burnt out issues of Witchblade. The story is pretty good. JD Smith’s coloring is fabulous. Again there’s the lateness issue...
(I still think all these creator owned owners are spending too much time playing video games, this applies especially to Mad and Turner, at least that’s the feeling I got from their interviews.)
*Ascension - used to be on the top ten but art and story are just way down from the first few issues. This "crossover" villians from Witchblade is totally unnecessary and just ruins the whole book. I think that there is enough material in the Minean/Dayak relationship plus human interaction, to make the book work. Truth be told the book still has a lot of potential, but so far it remains as that, unrealized potential. :( Some of the covers can be cool tough. I really like that ad for #15, it’s Rowena by Ching (?). Finch’s painted cover for #11 was pretty cool as well.
*Darkness - Art is way up, Benitez is awesome, but the stories are very
sucky. Ennis was the pergect writter for this book. :(
*Witchblade - I still think the first 8 issues, were the absolute best, after that was mostly a big waste of time and money. I know I’m still buying it and every time I wonder, why bother? I know loads and loads of people say "wouldn’t it be nice to have a Wb issue with out the wb making an appearance" and all I can think is that what we’ve been having for yonks! Sure it makes a cameo here and there but that’s it. Sure there was that big bang in Family Ties, but the crossover sucked anyway, so that doesn’t count. And where the heck are those bad guys we;ve been promissed that were looking for the ‘blade and it’s wielder? Frankly the book is boring.
*Tales of The Darkness - I don’t really like it. I don’t know, the stories are just boring, to me at least. The art could have been better as well.
*Tales of the Witchblade - It only had a few enjoyable issues. I think the best was #1.
*More Than Mortal - "Sagas" was kinda boring, and although Romano’s pencils are really good his paintings look rather bland. I still enjoy "Truths and Legends", story is nice, and Firchow’s pencils inprove with each issue, and the colors are pretty snazy as well.
*Morbid Angel - Well that went down the drain, didn’t it? :( Well, the whole company is down the toilet. How the mighty have fallen. :( Really too bad They could have been a top 20 company, LNS was there for a while, but then... *sigh* well LNS is no more, now there is only EH! Productions, and they just keep postponin their crap books anyway.
*Aria - Well, the story is of to a slow start, but has quite a bit of potential. I can’t wait for Kildare and Puck to start kicking some ass!!!
:) And the art is amazing, drop dead gorgeous.
*Deity / Catseye - I’m a late starter but at least I jumped on the wagon on time for Catseye #1. Nice stories, art is quite nice as well. Though the whole homey lingo and attitude is getting on my nerves.
*New Vampire Miyu - Well slow start, good middle, and we’re back to boring.
The art is confusing at times, and often you don’t know what’s going on.
So my fav books would probably be:
Divine Right
Aria
More than mortal T&L
Fathom
Battlechasers
Crimson
Danger Girl
Tenth
Coven
