Story:
Khyre Crane was your average, everyday Joe, a
real blue collar nobody... Or so he thought. Khyre worked at a Nuclear
Power Plant, along with dozens of fellow employees, a job he was very
pleased with, as it paid well, and the hours were good. He is a young
man, in his mid-twenties, well muscled, but still average build, average
height...basically average. Khyre was quite a gifted computer technician
and programmer; he had done a stint in the United States Navy, on a nuclear
missile sub. He got the job at the power plant after his term in the Navy
ended. He ran the computers and maintained the software and networks for
the plant, and did it quite well. Very much happy with his lot in life,
he reaped the benefits of his calling.
His normal life came to a crashing halt 7 months after he began his job,
when the nuclear reactor at the power plant went critical. The plant was
evacuated, people were ushered out, and containment crews were sent in.
The crews believed they had everything under control, and people were
sent back into the building to finish out their workday. Khyre went down
to reset all the breakers for the computer systems, and to restart all
the terminals in the building. Unbeknownst to him, the area he entered
was highly contaminated with radiation.
Khyre was busily throwing switches in the lower levels, when 3 men in
enviro-suits rushed him, yelling at him to leave the area before the high
levels of radiation in the area toxically contaminated him. Running for
the safety of the upper levels, as the lower levels were being ventilated
and the air there in recycled, Khyre's body began to betray him. His eyes glowed yellow and his skin turned orange and
hardened. His body became consumed by fire, burning the hands and arms
of the men in the enviro-suits who were seeking to help him leave the
area. Khyre panicked, his mad dash for the stairs became significantly
easier, when he took a leap, and bounded up an entire flight of 13 stairs.
As he left the area, the containment personnel rushing behind, the fire,
which sheathed his body, began to die down, leaving him with a flaming
aura, and dense orange skin.
Khyre's innate mutant powers had finally manifested during his intense
and traumatic experience with the radiation. The radiation itself helped
to promote the manifestation, as his body's natural ability to harness
the power of the atom took control. Khyre went home that day, making it
to his house in no time. There he remained for a week, calling into work,
telling them he was ill. When he attempted to return to his job, unable
to hide his orange skin, his employment was terminated
in the best interests of those he worked with.
Without a job, Khyre was forced to look elsewhere for employment.
This proved to be very difficult, and almost impossible. Khyre's only
chance at earning a living came from the United States Department of Defense.
The DoD offered him a job as a special operative; his talents lay in demolition,
and large-scale combat. Khyre's ability to harness the atom granted him
control over the radiation, and fire. His dense orange skin granted him
a resistance to certain attacks as well as enhancing his strength, and
his ability to fly yielded him a high mobility, making it easy for him
to complete his objective and return to safety.
After a falling out with the DoD, where-in they decided to scrap the project,
along with everyone involved, Khyre left, keeping his code-name Proton, and began
to do his best to defend the city he grew up in from crime. While fighting
crime in Paragon City, he ran in to some old acquaintances from his days
with the DoD who were of similar thinking and disposition, Gaidan Kane
and Vendel. He joined their up-and-coming team of super heroes to battle
the criminal element in society, and to insure that freedom and justice
were rights enjoyed by all...no matter the cost.
