Michael was a very normal kid until his powers revealed themselves around age 14. For roughly a week Michael was trapped in his mist form, terrified and confused with no idea of how to control his powers in order to turn them off. For a while, all he was able to do was terrify his parents, who thought he was a ghost or something. He was semi-invisible, intangible, and walking through walls, so it was the quick conclusion to jump to. When they were finally able to speak to their confused, weeping child, he told them that he was alive, but had no idea what was going on. After consulting numerous experts, it was finally determined that he was a mutant and his powers had just activated. After calming him down and telling him to concentrate in order to come back into his regular form.

Michael was graced with rather understanding parents. Finding out that their son was a mutant, they paid the money (even though they were not rich people by any means, living on the father's military, and later police officer, earnings only) to get him experts to help him train in his powers. Later in life, when funding for his training was running low, Mike's father asked him what he thought of the Alpha Squadron. When he saw that his son would be excited to join the team, his father asked Sizzle personally when at the Alpha Mansion to detain some mutant hating thugs that attacked the team. Sizzle agreed, and Mist became part of the team.
