The Paladins were a team of former 50-State Initiative recruits that banded together to work as super heroes without government supervision. After one of their Initiative colleagues, the alien Fifty-One, broke bad, the Paladins tracked him down to bring him in. They stumbled into the operations of the villain Veronica Eden, with whom Fifty-One had allied. When the Paladins confronted Fifty-One, they were joined by Iron Man and Captain America, who were in Eden's trail. A shoot-out between the heroes and Eden's gunmen ensued, which Eden and Fifty-One used as a diversion to escape.
