Earvin Johnson Jr. was born on 14 th August 1959 in Lansing , Michigan . He was the first overall pick of Los Angeles Lakers in 1979. Also known as Magic, he played for the Lakers during the 1980s and early 1990s as a point guard. He assisted the Lakers to win five NBA Championships in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988. He also helped the Lakers to make four other NBA Finals apperances. In 1979, he led Michigan State University to the NCAA title. He became the only NBA rookie to take home the title of NBA Finals Most Valuable Player in 1980.

He is one of the few athletes who changed the momentum of the sport with his unique and magnificent skills. He earned the name "Magic" due to his extraordinary passing kills and graceful winning ways. He was not only a dazzling scorer but was also proficient in all the other aspects of the sport. From time to time, he displyed his skills by leading the league in assists and steals also. His no-look passes on the fast break, dominated the era of 80s. though he and Larry Bird were the best pals off the field but they charmed millions of new fans to the NBA by rejuvinating the Lakers-Celtics rivalry.

In May 1980, Johnson played the best game of his career. As a rookie, he substituted Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in game 6 of the NBA Finals. He started the game at center and ended up by playing every position delivering an outstanding performance. He scored a game-high 42 points and notched game-high 15 rebounds and eventually led the Lakers to win the NBA Finals. Johnson was the tallest point guard in the history of the league. The present generation who are finicky about the sport still wish that they entered the World in Johnson's era so that they could have seen the live display Magic's performance. In November 1991, his announcement that he has become the victim of HIV virus and would retire from the basketball, stunned the nation. In 1991, he established The Magic Johnson Foundation to raise the funds in favor of the organizations that deal with HIV/AIDS. He also set up a nationwide chain of movie theaters viz. Magic Johnson Theatres. The buildings are primarily set up in the urban locations only.
