Response to "The Bet"
I think the banker thinks humanity is stupid. He thinks it's stupid becuase it is so engrossed in life on earth. He thinks humanity should try to gain passage to heaven or possibly a higher level of thinking. He thinks people are insignifigant because when they die, they're just gone and their whole life has been worthless. He thinks money is worthless and everything material is worthless.
I think capital punishment is better for murderers who don't care, but life imprisonment is better for people who care about who they killed. It's like when they gave the lady who killed her two kids life imprisonment. They should have a certain capital punishment where the criminal is injected with a virus and they are used to find cures for the virus. That would actually be worth it. We should also have capital punishment because our prisons are overcrowded anyway.
Feelings About War
Because it solves problems in a hands-down, effective manner, war is a necessity. Without it there would be so many suppressed feeling that people could go insane. They could start killing innocent people instead of the source of their anger. The easiest targets, women and children, would be the most vulnerable. Without war, people would have no means of venting their anger.
War is one of the only ways for the oppressed to rise up, and the evil to be taken down from power. Peaceful revolts by peasants in Medieval times were met with the local lord's cavalry and infantry. If they didn't stand down, they were dispersed with force or, in many cases, promptly massacred. With war, the peasants will have more spirit and more fight in them, because they all support the ware, while only the cautious ones supported the peaceful revolt. In war, the peasants have the chance to completely let out all their rage.
If everyone one had to suppress their feelings, it would only be okay for regulare people. All the people with crazy ideas in their head would resort to terrorism even more than usual. Terrorism is worse than war because it targets innocents, not soldiers. Innocent people have no way to defend against attacks on them. n war, crazy people can take it out on an even playing field.
War makes it possible to vent your anger without too many innocent people being hurt. It also makes the winner very clear cut, and the best side won. It goes along with natural selection and only the strong survive and reproduce, the most primal urges of all humans.
Would I like to be Finny's Friend? (from A Separate Peace)
I would like to be Finny's friend because he sounds a ot like me. We both like sports, we both like doing fun stuff outside and we both don't mind getting in a little trouble. One difference is that he doesn't do too well in school, but I do pretty well. He isn't very mean either, which is good. He can also get out of a lot of trouble, which is also good. I think Finny would be a good friend.
One Trait I Admire About My Mom
The trait I admire most about my mom is her patience. Patience is a must have because the people in our family don't hvae a lot of it for each other. My mom is the mediator if anyone has a problem with someone else. She can settle disputes without resorting to violence or shouting. My mom is the most patient person in our family.
When my sister and I get in a fight about what to watch on TV, Mom's the one we usually go to. In this situation, I have the tube control and I'm watching "The Simpsons" and during commercials, my sister wants me to switch to Nickelodeon. I don't want to switch because I might miss a funny part. My sister keeps bugging me, and I want to smack her upside the head, but my mom intervenes and settles the conflict. She is so patient because she doesn't take sides.
When my brother is reading the comics, and then gets up to get something, my sister swipes them sometimes. His solution is usually to wrestle her to the ground,(no hard task), and then resume reading. My sister will go crying to my mom, who then comes and tells my sister not to steal the comics, after being patient through the argument.
My mom is the most patient person in our family. She lets people argue, and then she settles the problem while my dad lets us fight, and then yells at us to shut up. My mom is very instrumental in making sure we don't all go crazy and beat each other up.
Who Would I Dine With?
If I could dine with one person, it would be Edson Arantes Do Nascimento. He is the greatest soccer player ever. He has won 3 World Cups for the Brazilian national Team. He was voted Sportsman of the Century in a world-wide poll. He may have single-handedly popularized soccer in the U.S. while playing for the New York Cosmos along with Beckenbauer. Once a bitter civil war was stopped in Biafra so the soldiers could watch him in an exhibition game.
We would meet in Rio de Janeiro, and he's such a nice guy, the soccer team could come for free. We'd have a big feast of stuffed shells and his favorite food, and during dinner I'd ask lots of questions like, how do you deal with you immense fame?, just how rich are you?, what do think of soccer today?, are Rhonaldo, Romario, and Bebeto filling your shoes well?, do you paly in any leagues still?, how's your job as sports ambassador?, and how was it on the Cosmos? Then, we'd go outside and juggle or play a pick-up game with everyone. Before I left I'd say thanks, and "Why'd you change your name to Pele?"
My take on the painting "Landscape with Garage Lights"
This picture reminds me of New Orleans because it looks like a harbor. When I went there I only got glimpses and snatches of the inner city, so it may not be accurate. This looks like the industrial part of the harbor because there's a coal tower, and gas stations for fuel. It might also be a commercial area because there's a store to buy fish in and a steamboat, probably with tourists. It looks like an old harbor because the gas pumps are old with a light on top and gas is only 15 cents and this was made in 1931. There's a shadowy figure to the right and I think he's seasick and barfing.
Sentence to the Leader of Iraq
I kill you now, but first, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
Chivalry
A woman's life should be spared before a man's because it's chivalrous and it's a big symbol of manhood to protect women. They are the ons who, like the article said, bear our life and fulfill one of the primal urges - to reproduce.
Women murderers should face the same kinds of punishment as men, because it's the same, heinous crime, for which there is no forgiveness but self-defense, insanity, and keeping the peace. Just because women are usually weaker and cry more doesn't mean they should get off the hook.
Equality in opportunity to die is good. Anyone who wants to serve their country through combat or police work should be able to, and, as in the preceding paragraph, women should be put to punishment for their crimes. The men and women who wnat to serve and are qualified for their jobs should be able to go to the front lines to help out. If I was on a sinking ship and the call went out, "Women and children into the lifeboats," I'd let them go in first and hope there were enough lifeboats left for everyone.

Kindergarten Story
One day I was making a number with buttons glued to paper and I really hate buttons and the teacher had a huge tub full of them. I got up and asked to go to the bathroom because I didn't feel so good and the second I got up I wavered and hurled halfway to the trash can. I felt really embarassed and I think I started crying. The teacher made a joke and then I felt better. I learned not to let something you hate get to you. I remember it because it's the only memory I have of kindergarten practically.
Response to a quote about happiness in families
This means that when you're unhappy you can't get with other unhappy families, you're just alone. Heppy families can get with other happy families because they're all alike. This concept also applies to individual people. Whoever said this was probably talking about today's world because there are so many unhappy families. There are all sorts of problems like divorces, fights, drug and alcohol abusing families, and most often apathy towards each other. Apathy is the worst because without it everyone would care too much to let other family members fall into drugs, alcohol and other problems. If people really cared they would help those already with problems to shake the. The drugs and alcohol only widen the gap between people, but apathy starts it off. It is the main cause or one of the starting causes of divorice, which is a major problem today. About half of all marriages end in divorce.
The happy families get along with each other because they care and there isn't any apathy. They help each other out of ruts and don't let them get in alcohol or drug trouble. That's what the quote means.
"In the race to be better or best, do not miss the joy of being."
I agree with this statement. I think people should try to have fun with whatever they're doing. If you're trying to make the varsity team, and you're treating it like a big chore, look ofr opportunities to mess around. If it's raining during practice one day you should slide around in the mud or do whatever makes you happy. If you're at work and it's really tedious, dress up in a funny costume one day to surprise customers or fellow workers. That will make everyone around you happy.
Society
Society is lazy. People always say they're going to do something good for someone else and then they don't do it. They don't care about each other because they only do what's good for them or their group. They don't make the extra effort to help others out even just a little. Because people are too lethargic, they don't help each other out.
Society is a giant web where every person is connected to each other. Every decision we make, every step we take, will affect someone else either soon or in the long run. Something as trivial as turning off a light could have a major impact. Say a painter goes to an apartment where the resident is out at work. He paints and leaves, but neglects to turn off the liht in the room. THe landlord comes in later and gets really angry because he warned the resident not to waste electricity. The the resident comes back and gets kicked out. That resident got kicked out because the painter was too lazy to turn off the light.
I am a prime example of laziness. When I sat down to do the body of this paper I turned on the music to help me think. After 15 minutes of listening I figured out it was only a distraction. I began drifting furthur from this paper. I got a snack, watched some TV, and just sat listening to the music. After an hour I finally turned it off and wrote the first body paragraph in about five minutes. That shows just how lazy I am and how much I procrastinated just to avoid 5 minutes of work.
Even friends can be lazy and hurt us without even wanting to. Yesterday my neighbor came over and borrowed my dad's ladder to paint. He finished with it and left it lying out in his yard. There is a potential that someone could steal it, but fortunately we live in a good neighborhood. My neighbor could have hurt us just because he was lazy and didn't help us by carrying it back over to our house.
These examples are situations when being lethargic hurt or could have hurt us. People are unknowingly affecting each other negatively just by being lazy. So the next time you're neglecting to do something think of its affect on someone else.
