Typical American

Typical American, by Gish Jen, is a book about a fictional family of Chinese immigrants and how America shapes them as people. It was an OK book with a good story but it would have been better if it was real. Whenever they had or something bad happened, it seemed like a soap opera. The liner notes will tell you all about how funny the book is, but don't believe them - I don't even think it made me chuckle once. It was easy to read and get into despite the lack of emotion I felt for the characters. 3 of 5.
