The Dark Knight Returns is what they wrote after taking a hiatus from the Batman story, or maybe figuring out that he never aged in the comics. I couldn't figure out which it was. The story is about Batman returning to conquer enemies old and new, and to prove himself as the ultimate survivor/crimefighter. The artwork looks like it was drawn by a really good artist who was trying to draw like a kid. The lines aren't clear-cut and precise, but that just adds to the surrealism of the story, which includes all sorts of improbable situations. These situations are offset by many grimly realistic events which add levity to the story. In the end it's part fantasy, part reality, which is what Batman's world has always been. 5 of 5 stars
