I read the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings this summer during my lunch breaks at Wal-Mart. It was the only part of my job I actually looked forward to. It's no secret why fanstasy books started to become more popular after this series came out. The pure concern you have for the main characters and the wonderment you experience each time you discover a new type of creature or a part of the history of Middle-Earth made this book a huge attraction for me. You can basically read the first chapter in any book and not reach a place you want to put it down till you're finished. The complexity of the story is never confusing and the stories move with great fluidity despite the cliffhangers Tolkien continuously inserts to switch between different plots. The only hang-up I had was mixing up Meriadoc with Pippin while they travelled to Gondor. The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King are possibly the best books you will ever read.
