Lizzy paced as Oz drummed on his legs and Devon chatted up some girl before their first performance on the Family Values Tour. They were all beyond nervous but they each had their own way of dealing with it. They were cued to go on stage. The Love Dolls played their hearts out but the people just didn’t seem interested. It wasn’t that the audience hated them or booed them, they just plain ignored them. Which was just as unsettling.
Their first five shows went that way. Limp Bizkit saw their spirits lagging so they decided to see if they could help. They invited them out clubbing.
Devon was excited about alcohol and needed a girl, that moment on the plane had really shook him up. Oz was up for anything. Lizzy thought going dancing would make her feel better. As they entered Limp Bizkit was mobbed by fans. Fred and Wes hung back with Lizzy as everyone else went for drinks and girls.
“So who wants to come dance with me?” She smiled at them both.
“I will,” Fred was so anxious it made Lizzy wonder if there wasn’t an ulterior motive there.
“All right then, come on hun.” She grabbed his hand and pulled him out to the dance floor. She felt better already, dance music just did that to her, especially the electronica/techno type. She giggled as the Bloodhound Gang song “The Bad Touch” came on.
“You and me, baby, ain’t nothin’ but mammals so let’s do it like they do on the discovery channel,” rang out through the club. Now she felt one hundred percent better, this was her kind of song. When the song finished she realized she wanted a drink.
“Come on, I want a drink.”
They grabbed some drinks and found Wes sitting at a table with a groupie. Lizzy began talking with Wes while the groupie tried to get Fred’s attention. Lizzy thought Wes was really cool and spent the rest of the night talking with him. Devon and Oz found some random girls to dance the night away with.
That night there were problems with the Love Dolls’ bus, so they ended up on Limp Bizkit’s bus to the next town. Oz and Devon passed out on some seats immediately, as did most of Limp Bizkit. Lizzy and Fred were the only ones awake. Lizzy had a feeling this was going to go badly.
“So,” Fred mumbled nervously.
“So,” Lizzy was anxious to escape.
“What do you think of touring so far?” idle conversation was not his strong point.
“It’s okay. Kinda lonely in a way.” Oh fuck, that was intelligent, leave him wide open to hit on her.
“Yeah, I know what you mean. Surrounded by people but you feel all alone.” He moved closer to her.
“No, well sort of, I just miss Johnny.” Come on Fred take the hint.
“Oh.” He leaned in closer to kiss her.
“Uh Fred, I don’t think we should do this. It’s not you. It’s just I’m in love with someone else.”
“Oh, Johnny.” He turned away hurt. “I think I’m gonna go to bed now.”
Lizzy didn’t want to hurt him but she loved Johnny. This was going to be weird now.
More and more audiences began to recognize their songs. They were actually getting into it. They soon found out why. “Deliriously Dreaming” had hit Top 40 on Billboard’s singles chart and the album was climbing too. All of the rest of the concerts went fabulously, but something bad was brewing.
One night at a party Devon was extremely depressed. He had heard Lizzy proclaim her love for Johnny to Fred the night before. Someone passed Devon a joint and without a second thought he took a hit. He liked the way he felt and began smoking more and more. Bad things were brewing.
