Soloman Skaggs History

From the history of Grundy Co., Mo.

Solomon Skaggs, son of Wesley and Elizabeth Skaggs, was b. in Davis co., Indiana, Oct. 2 l836. He lives on route two, trenton. Mr. Skaggs was md. Jan. 8, l874, to Maria E. Baker, daughter of Martin Baker. They have one child living and two dead. Frank B. was b. Sept. l7, l883. He was md. to Mrs. Etta Clininsmith, Dec. 23, l908, and lives with his father. Wm. B., was b. June 20, l876, d. Aug. 23, l877; Lula, b. Sept. l3, l880, & d. Aug. l0, l888.
Mr. Skaggs' mother d. when he was small, and his father afterwards md. again. the family came from Indiana to Grundy Co. in l853, settling on the farm now owned by Solomon Sherow. He lived with his father until grown, when he bought the farm he now owns, within a mile of his father's old farm. here he ketp bachelor-s hall for two years, and was then married. The farm containss two hundred and forty acres and is well improved.
At the outbreak of the war Mr. Skaggs joined Co. B, 23 rd, Mo. and served over three years. He was in the battle of Shiloh, and the siege of Atlanta. He was captured at Shiloh and spent six months in prison in Macon, Ga., and Montgomery, Ala. He is a member of the R.P. Carnes Post, G.A.R. at Dunlap. Mr. skaggs is a stockholder in the Dunlap Bank, and in the Citizens Bank, at Laredo.

History of Grundy Co.

Solomon Skaggs was b. Oct. 2, l839, Davies Co., Indiana. His father John W. Skaggs, was of Tenn. birth, his mother, Elizabeth, from Va. He was educated in the common schools, and in l853, came to this county with his father. Their family, like a great many others who came were poor, but as land wad cheap they managed to secure a home and ----maybe said grew up with the country.
The subject of our sketch enlised Aug. 26, l86l, in company B, twentythird, Mo. vol. infantry was in Mo. during l86l, but in the spring of l862 wnet to Tenn. and participatd in the battle of Shiloh, their first engagement; there Mr. S. was taken prisoner, and taken to Corinth, then, for safety to Menthis, Jackson, Miss., Mobvil and Montgomery, then to Macon, Ga. where he remained in prison five months; was then, with many others, sent to Richmond, Va. and was two days in Libby Prison, then paroled, after being a prisoner six months and thirteen days; after two months in a United states hospital, he again joined his company, and was with ---man until the fall of Atlanta. After his discharge he returned home and to the pursuits of the farm.
He was united in marriage Jan. 8, l874, to Miss maria E. Baker, b. Feb. l6, l84l. By this union they have two children Willei b. June 2l, l876, d. Aug. 24, l877; and ?Alice, b. Sept. l3, l880.
John W., father of Mr. Skaggs, was b. Nov. 29, l8l3, and d. Nov. 2, l876. Elizabeth, his wife, now in the seventy-third year of age, lives with Mr. Skaggs.


Solomon Skaggs, Decalration for Pension---Grundy Co., Mo., May 29, l9l2,

Appearing before a Notary Public, was Solomon Skaggs, aged 72 years, a resident of Marion Township, in Grund co., Mo. and states he enrolled at Trenton, Mo. under the name of Solomon Skaggs on the 26th day of Au. l86l, as a private in Co. b. 23rd Regt.m, Mo. Inf. Vol., in the service of the United States in the Civil War. That he was honorably discharged at Atlanta, Georgia, 22 Spet. l884.
He states he is 5 feet, 6 inches, dark complexion, gray eyes, black hair, that his occupation was farmer and that he was b. oct. 2, l839 at davis Co., Indiana. That he has lived in Grundy Co. ever since leaving the service. Act June 27, l890
