Squire Scaggs
Squire Scaggs died at Ceredo on the 8th inst., at the home of his son Clark Scaggs, at the age of 94 years.
He was born in Lawrence County, KY., in 1817, and moved to Brush Creek in this county, just before the beginning of the Civil War. He enlisted in the army at its inception and fought during the four years that tried men's souls, and made a valiant soldier in the cause which he advanced. He had the honor of fighting under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. He was with Stonewall Jackson in the battle of Chancellorsville, and witnessed his death on the field. He participated in the hard fought combat at Gettysburg, and helped to swell the ranks of Lee in Virginia. After the war he settled on Beech Fork where he lived until a few years prior to his death.
He leaves surviving him two sons and five daughters, viz: Jesse H. Scaggs of Wayne; Clark Scaggs,of Ceredo; Mrs. Susan Ferguson, of Huntington; Mrs. John H. and James Smith of Rich Creek, Wayne County; Mrs. Malinda Stephens of Durban Creek, Lawrence County, Ky; and Mrs. Jarrell of Greenup, Ky.
