The Tower of Galata was a tower which stood on the north side of the Golden Horn in Constantinople, in the town called Galata. The tower marked the north end of the great chain, which was stretched across the mouth of the Golden Horn to prevent enemy ships from entering the harbor. The tower contained the machinery for raising and lowering the chain.

Built by the Byzantines, the tower, named Megalos Pyrgos, controlled the northern end of the massive sea chain that closed the entrance of the Golden Horn. The tower stood 220 feet tall and was the highest building of it's type in the world in its day.
