As reviewed by Linrandir (and quite bitter this month I might add!)

Good day, everyone.
This particular article is the start of a semi-new feature here on the Tower: The monthly Magazine Review. This month, we start with White Dwarf #257. Featured: Inquisitor, Inquisitor, Inquisitor. Oh, and a little smidge on the Dark Elves and some Chapter Approved for Non-Eldar Psykers.
So let's get that ball rolling, shall we? Since GW is debuting their new "yes it's KIND of a RPG but it ISN'T" game Inquisitor in 54mm scale, they have plastered it all over the magazine. There are a number of Entirely Skippable articles written by the game designer, the head artist, blah, blah, blah. Sounds to me like SOMEONE ran out of real content and resorted to filler.
We have a Battle Report, we have converter's corner, we have the obligatory plug for buying overpriced bits. The storytelling is actually interesting, though the exact goals are vague. This is a commonly-seen teaser, designed to make you curious enough to buy more magazines.
Personally, I plan to buy one or two Inquisitor models for use strictly as display models. The game just doesn't excite me. It's nothing more than oversized and overpriced Mordheim 40K. On the other hand, if you're the type of roleplayer who likes nothing more then combat, combat, combat then this is the game for you. Go, have fun.
The Chapter Approved is again a disappointment, as it continues the trend of catering to the Space Marines and the Imperium. In this case, the Librarian Psykers. Well, any Psyker, really, that doesn't have pointy ears and wears Rune Armor. In other words, these powers are good for anyone BUT Eldar, who can't use them at all. There are about 36 different "minor" powers that all cost 15 points apiece. I am not listing them here, because I like having functional fingers. Suffice it to say that it gives the Marine Librarian a hell of a lot more bang for the buck. If you play Marines, and almost everyone does, you will like the article except for the following factors:
1. BOTH players MUST agree to use the rules, otherwise no go.
2. The powers are subdivided into categories, and you MUST roll ONCE for each possible power you want in each category AT THE GAME TABLE IN VIEW OF THE OPPONENT! If you get a lemon power, and there are some, you're out of luck.

There's an article on Warhammer, with a skirmish scenario for Vampire Count vs. Vampire Count. I don't play Fantasy, so it doesn't really have any significance for me.
GW also plugs Games Day with about 15 pages worth of ads, and something about some sale for people who come up with the answer to a rather inane question: "Waaagh. What is it good for?" This is ONLY at the GW retail stores, so for those of us who aren't blessed by having one in our town we're out of luck. Why don't they stop opening stores in Maryland and try moving down a little further south to Atlanta, hmm? Well, that's not true. I wouldn't go there even if they did open one. Oh well.

So, all together I have to say that WD 257 is disappointing. Don't buy it unless you have specific need for one of the articles or just NEED to read about the Inquisitor design team's thoughts on the game.
