A Return to Forever

Chapter Four

The evening was cool but clear as Nick pulled his Caddy out of the garage and onto the streets of Toronto. The moon was bright, and many couples were out enjoying a walk in the moderate weather. Pangs of loneliness pierced him as he wished he could enjoy a complete relationship with Nat. However, he knew that becoming closer to her would only entice the beast within to demand her blood.

Trying to ease his feelings of isolation, he turned on the radio to listen to the closest thing to family that he had left. Surely LaCroix would be sensing his mood and would have some point to drive home about his feelings.

The CERK radio music ended, and the voice of his master filled the interior of the Caddy.

"Greetings my good listeners. Tonight I have a something special for you: An amazing little poem written by a friend many years ago....

"The soul shall find itself alone
'Mid Dark thoughts of the gray tombstone
Not one of all the crowd to pry
into thine hour of secrecy.
Be silent in that solitude
which is not loneliness - for then
The spirits of the dead who stood
in life before thee are again
in death around thee - and their will
shall overshadow thee: BE STILL
The night tho' clear shall frown
and the stars look not down
from their high thrones in the heaven
with light like hope to mortals given

"But their red orbs without beam
To thy weariness shall seem
as burning and a fever
which would cling to thee Forever
Now are thoughts thou shall
not banish
Now are visions ne'er to vanish
from thy spirit shall they pass
no more - Like the dewdrops from the grass....
(Spirit of the Dead, by Edgar Allen Poe)

"There are more stanzas, however, I believe you have had quite enough for now. Ask yourself these questions. Are you alone or do the spirits of the dead haunt you? Perhaps your guilt clings to you as the dew clings to the grass? Do the stars look down upon you with hopes of mortality?

"AAAAAHHH....... But what is hope? The errant yearning for achieving a dream...... As you contemplate this remember I SEE YOUR DREAMS I SEE YOUR HOPE and I KNOW THE TRUTH IN YOUR LIFE Because I am the Nightcrawler and ....I....KNOW.....All!"

Realizing that listening to LaCroix was a mistake, he reached over and rapidly turned off the radio. Within a moment he was turning into the parking lot at the Coroners Building. LaCroix's words were still echoing through his thoughts. ]

There was no doubt that his father was picking up his latest feelings. It was clear that LaCroix knew of both his hopes and dreams, but he felt them to be of no real concern. But how would LaCroix feel if he knew that there may exist a way to prevent his son from ever going down the path of evil? Yes, he still had hopes of returning to mortality, and no matter how hard LaCroix tried, he could never take that away from him. He may have drained him of his mortal soul, but he could not deny him his dreams.

After locking his car, he walked into the building and decided to pause at the doorway, and silently watch the beautiful mortal busily distracted with her work. Catching his form from the corner of her eye, she started when she noticed him. Her reaction of surprise at his quiet arrivals always brought a smile to his face. There were some parts of his hunting nature he enjoyed too much to ever stop. Prowling and lurking in the shadows gave him way too much pleasure to ever relinquish those skills.

After catching her breath, Nat walked over and slapped his arm.

"What's so funny?"

Still smiling he said, "Oh, nothing."

Nat turned back and walked into the lab with Nick following.

"Okay Nick, now that you managed to scare a few years from my short mortal life, I want you to take a look at this." Moving towards her desk, she opened the top drawer as wide as it would open. "Look closely at this."

Looking at the interior of the very organized drawer, he noticed everything from paper clips and rubber band to papers and pencils. Then he glanced back at Nat. "Okay Nat, you are very neat, and I am not. So I will try to be better. Is that what you are trying to tell me?"

"Nick, am I right or left handed?"

"Right?"

"You're correct. Where are my pens and pencils?"

Looking back down, he answered matter-of-factly. "The left side."

"That's right, but I do not keep them there. The moment I reached into my desk tonight, I realized that someone had been through my desk and thought that they had put everything back correctly. I then went to check the refrigerator and found the same problem with my samples from you. They are on the wrong side, and a few of them have been substituted with human tissue and blood."

She had opened the refrigerator door in illustration as she was speaking. Closing the refrigerator door, she turned back to look deeply into Nick's eyes.

"Someone’s been in here, Nick, and they were interested in you."

Breaking away from her look, he turned to walk a few steps as he thought. Then he twisted back to face her.

"Nat, do you think that this has something to do with the time travel experiment?"

"It could Nick. What do you think we should do?"

Moving close to her, he placed a hand on each of her shoulders. "Nat, I want you to set up an appointment for the two of us to meet with these two scientists that know of me and what I am. I am going to speak with LaCroix. He may be aware of any unusual activity that may be making our existence known. One more thing. When I leave, call Tracy and have her bring down the forensic team to check for prints and anything else that might lead us to whoever did this."

"Nick, what do I tell Tracy?"

"Tell her that you suspect a serious breech in security, and that I will meet her here in an hour."

Walking towards the telephone to call Tracy, Natalie turned back to Nick, but he was gone. A shiver traveled through her body causing her to feel frightened as she thought of how dangerous Nick's secret could be in the wrong hands.
