Kaworu nagisa was born on the same day which Second Impact occured. He is the fifth child to be selected by the Marduk Institute and was sent directly by SEELE, without any prior approval of NERV. He is the best EVA pilot in the world since he has the ability to set his synch rate at any level with EVA-02, without even changing the core data. He is also that one who changes Shinji's view of life and guides him to learn more about himself. But his true identity is that Kaworu Nagisa is the last messenger, the Angel Tabris.

As Ritsuko said, Kowaru is the last Angel to be sent by God. Although he is in the form of a human, his destructive power is not worser than that of any other Angel. Quite the opposite, Kaworu is the strongest Angel to attack NERV. He produced the strongest A.T field on record and not even the Progressive knife could penetrate his field. When he generated his field, nothing could sustain the power and thus, the barriers leading to Terminal Dogma were destroyed. His destiny was to annihilate human kind and live forever with EVA-02, which was totally under his control. But in the last moment, he felt compassion for the human race and asked Shinji to kill him. Shinji complied and the earth was saved.
