In following the call of faith on our lives, there come times when we wake up and realize we are  smack dab in the middle of a dry spell - a famine in a desert.  We don't lack physical food - but. rather,  in these dry times, there is a scarcity of hope that God will bring His promises to truth.

During these times, it is imperative that we turn my focus upwards to Him - no matter how difficult it may be. That desperate feeling must turn our focus upwards, or we will surely perish.   God wants to remove from us anything that will interfere with His will for our lives. Oh, how often we fight the removal of these things!  When these testings and trials come, we have two choices of reactions:

We can maintain my focus on Christ and have confidence in His work in our lives.

OR,

we can focus on the dry spell and the desert - and suffer the resulting consequences of fear and disobedience.

Abraham was promised a son, but he began focusing on the lack of a son.

"Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar; so she said to Abram, 'The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her.' Abram agreed to what Sarai said.
So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife."
Gen 16:1-3

We must hang on to every promise God has given us!!! When we don't,  we know from experience that our faithlessness has disastrous consequences,  just as those suffered by Abraham.

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
Gal 2:20

Choose to live by faith in Him!

Through that and that alone, we can survive any desert!

Keeping this focus is no easy task.

A spiritual battle will always be brewing.

We live in a world that always seeks more, bigger, better, faster..... Yes, a person remaining in faith alone is bombarded from every side.   Even when we have been  able to keep our goals in focus, it is hard to stand our ground and not be knocked off our feet by the flood of life around us.

So, how do we keep ourselves focused on God as we go through this roller coaster called life?

If we keep in His Word, we will continually discover His unfailing and unchanging promises.   When the rough times hit,  we will have something to hang onto that will never change.   His Word remains firm no matter what is going on around us.

"But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does."
James 1:6-8

Shaky faith will cause us to be shaky in every aspect.

We will doubt everything that is of Him....most especially His love and His promises to us.  Oh, how satan loves to plant those seeds of insecurity in our heart!   How he loves it when we focus on anything that will take my trust off of God's plan to deliver us.   If I look away from the rock solid Promises and even glance at the storm threatening to sweep us away, our grasp weakens....

and we begin to fall.

On the other hand, as long as we keep my eyes on Him and His praises, we can only feel the storm raging around us, but not be carried away by it.

As we call out to Him to save use, He will hear and He will respond.   He has given us only two requirements for this:

1) living a righteous life and

2) being effective in our prayers.

"Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.
Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.
And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.
Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops."
James 5:13-18

When we are burdened to see His hand in our situation,  He sees our motives as pure and not as manipulation to get Him to get us out of a jam.

Our prayers need to be specific - actually naming our needs.   If we get to a point of not even knowing how to pray,   we can cling to the promise that the Holy Spirit is interceding for us.

So, in our present storms, we seek You, Father, as never before.   We come to You as though our lives depend on Your deliverance - because it does!   Establish our faith as  we trust You alone in these storms!!!   We believe that where we are right now in our lives is exactly where You want us to be, and we trust You to overcome any obstacles in the way or Your plan for our lives.   We know, and praise You, that You can turn even these storms into  powerful blessings!   We know that You are reshaping us, not ruining us, and in so doing, you are increasing our value for Your service!

In Jesus' Name we pray,

Amen

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade--kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.   In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.  These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls."
1 Peter 1:3-9

"Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.""
John 20:29

"But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life."
Romans 6:22
