PLEASE SAY A PRAYER FOR THE FAMILIES AND FELLOW FIREFIGHTERS OF THOSE WHO HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES WHILE TRYING TO SAVE OTHERS.

There are 1.2 million Firefighters in over 30,000 Fire Departments nationwide. Each year, nearly 100 Firefighters lose their lives in the line of duty and almost 100,000 are injured. In 1990, the U.S. Congress established the official  National Monument site on the campus of the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The monument itself was constructed in 1981. An annual memorial service is held to honor those who gave their lives the previous year. In 1992, Congress created the  National Fallen Fire Fighter's Foundation,  which is also on the National Fire Academy campus.

STORM KING MOUNTAIN - 1994

On July 2, 1994, a lightening strike started a fire on Storm King Mountain near Glenwood Springs, Colorado. By July 6, the fire had consumed nearly 2,000 acres and high winds had turned it into a wildfire of major magnitude. Smokejumpers, Hot Shots and Helitak members were brought in to help conquer the inferno. In the end, 14 of those men and women lost their lives.

memorial has been constructed at Two Rivers Park in Glenwood Springs. A trail on the mountain, tracing the route the Fire Fighter's took, is also maintained. Cement crosses mark the spots where those who died were found.
